“Wh… what?” I ask.

Roman chuckles. “It’s nothing.”

“No, not nothing. Tell me, I’m curious,” Lincoln says calmly.

“Well… okay. Just know we aren’t cupid geniuses or anything. It was Trish’s idea,” Nathan responds.

“What was?” Linc asks.

“She said if we refused to go to Dallas and made you go, she’d plant the idea that the regional manager should use the other ticket. Guess we’re lucky we didn’t offer Gary from Accounting the job first, huh?” Roman says, chuckling.

“Gary lives with SpongeBob,” Rhett corrects.

Kiara laughs at him, and I look at Roman.

“She thought you guys would hook up. She played matchmaker, and I guess it worked,” Sierra chimes in, running her hand over her tiny baby bump.

“I guess it did, but I’ve been in love with Lincoln long before Dallas,” I say honestly.

“Yeah, we know. You’d always ask about him when we’d come in,” Roman says. “I used to joke about it with Trish. That’s where she got the idea to plant the suggestion to make you regional manager to Linc.”

“Smart, that one,” I say.

“Diabolically crafty is more like it,” Lincoln mutters.

“Genius,” Sierra says.

I turn to Lincoln and pick gray fur off his shirt. “You got some of Kitty’s hair on you. Shoulda used the lint roller before coming.”

“Kitty?” Nate asks with amusement.

“Lincoln Silverstone, you meanin’ to tell me your brother ain’t met his niece yet?” I ask.

His lips kick up. “She’s a cat, not a child.”

“Wait. Linc, you have a pet? Since when?” Nathan asks.

I don’t let him speak. I launch into the entire story about how he got her.

“I can’t wait to meet her,” Sierra says with a laugh.

“Wow, just wow,” Roman says. “You’re nothin’ but a big ol’ softie under there, aren’t ya?”

“Sit, I’ll grab us beers,” I say to Lincoln.

“You sure?” he asks, ignoring his cousin.

“Yes, I’m sure,” I reply, wanting to give them time to talk without me there.

Rhett pulls on his mother’s sleeve and points to the inflatable children’s equipment. “Can I go on the slide?”

She nods and stands. “Yeah, baby. Let’s go.” She grabs his hand, and they walk off.

I look at Sierra to see her push buttons on her phone as she stands up, and then puts it to her ear. She smiles at us and says, “I’ll be back,” and begins chatting with someone as she walks off.
