“Don’t worry.” She placed a hand on his arm and gave him a reassuring smile. “I worked in admin for many years. I’ve seen it all.”

As it turned out, she’d never seen anything quite as bad as the state of Wyatt’s office. It consisted of two rooms. The smaller one at the front had chairs and a tall counter for his passengers to check in at, but the larger one behind made her eyes widen so much she was surprised they didn’t pop out of her head.

There were two desks, each one parallel to a wall. One held a desktop computer and a couple of trays, both of which was filled with piles of paper. The desk opposite it, however, could only be called a disaster. There was barely an inch of space visible on it. It was absolutely covered in paperwork and the sight of it made her gasp. “Holy shit.”

Her curse made Wyatt laugh. “I told you.”

“What on earth is all this?”

“Paperwork and files, mostly. I should have filed it all from the beginning, but it was easier to toss it on the desk. And then I think everything multiplied while I wasn’t looking.”

She smiled at him and placed her hands on her hips, looking over everything. “Well, it’s going to take some time, but I can certainly whip it into shape.” She sat on the tiny edge of the desk still visible. “You mentioned wanting me to set up a new financial system. Which one are you currently using?”

“Uh.” For the first time since she’d met him, Wyatt seemed embarrassed, his cheeks turning pink. “I’m not?”

“You’re not using any sort of accounting program?”

“Nope.”

She didn’t want to know how he’d managed to file his taxes for the past three years, then. “Okay. That’s not a problem, I can set one up for you that’ll be easy to maintain once I’m gone.”

Total silence fell over the room, and nausea rose up from the pit of her stomach. Suddenly, the idea of her being gone was completely unappealing. She dared to look at Wyatt, and his expression showed he clearly felt the same way.

She didn’t want to go anywhere. He didn’t want her to go anywhere.

Before she could digest that particular thought, his face was looming toward hers and she got up on her toes to meet his kiss. It was soft and sweet and far too brief, but it was enough to have warmth and desire flooding her veins.

“I appreciate anything you can do to make this room a lot less messy.”

She managed a smile. “I’ll dive in first thing tomorrow morning.”

He eased his butt onto the desk he clearly worked from, sitting opposite her. “I wanted to ask you something, Beth, and you can absolutely say no if you’re uncomfortable about it in any way.”

That had her intrigued. “Ask away.”

“I wondered if you’d go out on a date with me.”

“A date?” She was a little taken aback, not having expected him to ask that.

“Yeah, a date. You. Me. Dinner. Maybe some more kissing.”

Beth liked the sound of all of that, but something made her hesitate. She wasn’t going to be staying in Silverbell Shore, she couldn’t. If they went on a date, then what? “Wyatt.”

“Don’t say no, Beth. Hear me out first.” He waited for her nod, then continued, “I know you’re not planning on sticking around, but you can’t deny there’s something between us. We’re both attracted to each other, right?”

Something about the way he was looking at her told her he needed to hear the words. “Right. Yes, I feel it too.”

A flash of relief crossed his face before he went on, “So it can’t hurt for us to explore it a little, can it? I’d like to treat you to a beautiful night with no expectations on my part. You call the shots every step of the way.”

His offer was so sweet she had to blink back tears. “I’d love to, Wyatt. I’d love to go out on a date with you.”

The corners of his mouth curled up in the biggest grin she’d ever seen, and her heart pitter-pattered in her chest. “How about this Saturday night?”

“It’s a date.”

When he kissed her this time, she matched it in enthusiasm, and by the time they separated she was tempted to throw him on the desk and have her wicked way with him. Who was this woman? She barely recognized herself, but she liked it.

After he locked up the office and checked the boat was moored correctly one last time, they walked back to his cabin, their fingers entwined. They shared dinner and more kisses, both of which she enjoyed immensely, then after giving Freya a hug he walked her home.
