He opened the door and stepped inside.

The room was empty.

He hurried back into the kitchen where Jayne and Chet were still working at the table. “Have you seen Debi?”

They both shook their heads. “Maybe she just went for a walk,” Jayne suggested. “I mean, where is she going to go? It’s an island.”

He shook his head as the tension in his stomach grew. “Do me a favor and look out back; I’m going to check out front.” He ran toward the front door and out the house toward the long drive that disappeared into the forest.

Debi was nowhere to be seen.

Chapter9

Becca disconnected the line and slid her phone into the back pocket of her jeans. Cameron had taken her concerns seriously. She appreciated that and turned to face Marcie and Genie as they came out of the bar. “Did anyone know who those two guys were?” she asked her sister.

“No. No one has ever seen them before. Nor did they see Debi come in tonight,” Genie said, the look of concern on her face saying it all.

Becca’s stomach tightened. “Then who were we talking with? Cameron had a picture of her in his file. It was her.”

Genie shook her head. “We asked our waitress if she could describe Debi. She did one better; she showed us a picture they had of her up on the wall after winning a dart-throwing tournament. She would have beat you,” she said to Marcie. “Apparently, no one beats her.” Genie held out her phone and showed Becca the picture.

Becca’s heart plummeted. “That is not the same girl in Cameron’s file.”

“No, it’s not. Close though, but definitely not her.”

“We’ve been had,” Marcie said. “But how?”

Genie shook her head. “Either Cameron has someone working for Emerich in his organization, feeding him bad intel, or they’re not diligent enough to dive deep when doing their research.”

“Either way, someone’s head needs to roll,” Marcie said.

“I’ll say. But what were they trying to accomplish?” Becca asked.

Genie bit her lip. “I’m guessing she wanted to be taken back to the house.”

Cameron left her alone in Dad’s office. Becca pulled out her phone to call Cameron when he beat her to the punch. Her phone rang in her hand. “Cameron,” she answered. “Debi is not Debi.”

“What?”

She quickly explained what they’d discovered. “Whatever you do, do not leave her alone in the house.”

“Won’t be a problem, she’s already gone.”

“How?” She looked at Genie and Marcie. “Debi’s disappeared.”

“I left her alone in your dad’s office to make a phone call and when I went back she was gone,” Cameron said.

Becca sucked in a breath. “Did she take anything?”

“I don’t know,” he admitted. “I’m not sure I would notice if anything was missing, but I’m having a team come in to check the house for bugs. Kyle and I are coming back to get you. I don’t like this one bit. Stay on guard.”

“We will.” She looked around her and saw the mom-and-pop restaurant next to the motel. “We’ll be in the diner across the street having pie.” She hung up the phone. Genie looked at her with raised eyebrows. “We deserve pie after this.”

“With ice cream,” Marcie agreed.

The women crossed the street to the diner and slid into a booth with slick vinyl seats and a white laminate table. The place was cute, vintage, and smelled of coffee and bacon.

“What can I get you?” a waitress asked, walking toward them with a wide, friendly smile and a shock of red hair.
