“That’s fair. But if you don’t, what will you do?” she asked.

Kill Emerich.Becca didn’t respond.

Genie was reading her again; she could see it clearly in her face. “You can’t go after Emerich on your own. You will set us back, and someone will get hurt.”

“I can, and by doing so, I won’t put you all at risk,” Becca insisted, circling around to her original argument.

“If you kill him, then you’ll be the one in jail. He’s not worth that,” Genie said. “He has friends in very high places.”

Becca smirked. “Only if I get caught.”

Marcie reached for her hand across the table. “Please tell me you won’t go after him alone. You are my best friend. I won’t be able to stand it if we don’t do this together.”

“That’s sad. I’m a terrible friend,” Becca quipped.

“Maybe. But you’re still mine. Please don’t leave us. I need you. Before you guys found me, I was a loner. Just different enough that I didn’t fit in with anyone. I thought something was wrong with me. You proved to me that what I had was a gift that could be used for good. You taught me that. So yes, some people might not want to hear that they were experimented on as children, but so far, knowing the truth about what happened to us has been so much better than not knowing. Than living thinking we were freaks.”

Genie nodded. “And I’ll bet Debi is going to feel the same way. Once we find her.”

“If Emerich doesn’t have her already,” Becca said. “I’m fairly certain he already does. He went through a lot of trouble to feed us the information to go after the fake Debi. He couldn’t have done that without knowing about the real one.”

Marcie’s eyes filled with determination. “True, which means we only have to work harder. We now have another woman to help. Give us the chance to find him together as a team. Promise you won’t leave and go after him alone.”

“I can’t promise, but I will think about it,” Becca said, moved by Marcie’s sincerity. She was almost panicking at the thought of Becca leaving. It warmed Becca’s heart.

“Cameron and Kyle should be here anytime now,” Genie said, picking up her check and standing.

“I’m going to use the restroom real quick. I’ll meet you out front,” Marcie said.

The sound of a helicopter approaching filled the room. “There he is. You get the bill; I’ll see you inside the bird,” Becca said, anxious to find out if Debi had been in her room.

Genie hurried toward the cash register and the waitress standing behind it stared at the helicopter landing outside the front window with wide eyes. Becca couldn’t help smiling as she hurried past her, out the door toward, and Cameron. Marcie was right. They were friends, and she liked having a friend. She’d stick around, try and be a team player for a little while. It was kind of nice having friends to talk to.

Cameron opened the door and she climbed inside. She had just put on the headset to ask him if there was any news about Debi when a vibration shimmered through her head.

“Becca! Help!”

The scream reverberated through Becca’s mind and felt like a splash of cold water on her face.

Becca straightened, her heart pounding, her eyes widening.

She pulled off the headset and jumped out of the helicopter, running back toward the diner. Genie pushed open the glass front door. Becca grabbed her, spun her around, and pulled her back inside the restaurant. “Marcie! She’s in trouble.”

They bolted toward the restroom in the back. An exit door to the rear of the building was in front of them. They pushed through the door and saw a black SUV, looking a lot like the one they’d seen that afternoon, driving away at full speed.

“They have Marcie!” Becca yelled.

Genie pivoted back into the building and checked the women’s bathroom. It was empty.

“Come on, let’s get Cameron. Maybe we can follow them.” They ran at full speed back to the helicopter. Within minutes they were airborne and following the path they’d seen the SUV take, but the black vehicle was nowhere in sight.

After a few deep painful breaths, Becca realized Marcie was gone.

Emerich had her.

This couldn’t be happening!
