He shrugged. “Maybe, but she’ll get over it.”

She shook her head. “Why?”

“What do you mean, why?”

“Why can’t you just let me go? I can’t stand you.”

“That’s not true. You loved me. We loved each other. We were unstoppable together. The ultimate power couple. Don’t you remember?” He walked toward her, brushing her hair back from her face. She stood still, refusing to flinch, to kick him in the shins, to punch him in the Adam's apple. To knock his head clean off. She wanted to do all those things, but she didn’t do any of them.

Instead, she smiled.

She felt his sincerity. The poor man was living in a delusional world of his own creation.

She took a deep breath. “Say I do decide to stay. What next?”

“What do you mean?” he asked, clearly surprised.

“Before you wanted revenge on my dad and on the CTA. You got that.”

“Yes, I did.” His smile was revolting. “Almost.”

“What do you mean almost? My dad is dead.”

“True, but the CTA is still alive and well and kicking right along.”

“So that’s your big game plan now? Finish off the CTA and live happily ever after in the wilds of Alaska with the grizzly bears?”

“Would that be so bad? We can live here together and have it all.” He spread his arms wide, encompassing the whole room.

“I don’t buy it. You’ve amassed a huge compound with a lot of toys. To what end?”

“All in good time.” He walked into the kitchen, heading toward the plate of food.

“Why do you care about the CTA? It’s nothing like it was when my dad ran it. All we’re doing is trying to track down my dad’s subjects and help them. Why would you care about that or them?”

“You should have changed the name.”

She rolled her eyes. “Are you serious? That’s your beef? Fine, we’ll change the name. You know you could have picked up the phone and talked to me about it. You didn’t have to do all this.”

He laughed. “Would you have taken my call?”

She didn’t even know how to answer that.

“What’s the deal with Marcie?”

“That’s your question? Aren’t you going to ask about your boyfriend?” He picked up a piece of chicken off the plate and took a bite. “Oh, this is so good. You need to try this. The cook made it special for you.” He finished it off and took a bite of the potatoes. “I don’t think she likes me very much. But I pay her well, so she pretends.”

“I can’t imagine why she wouldn’t like you,” Becca said dryly.

“Oh, come on. Have some. I know you're hungry. Your boyfriend devoured his PB&J sandwich.”

She crinkled her brow in confusion. “If you’re talking about Cameron, he is my boss, not my boyfriend.”

“Good to hear,” he said, pointing his fork at her. “Good for you both.”

Becca took a deep breath. He really was crazy. “What do you want?” she asked him, growing weary of his games as her anger started to dissipate. “And why did you have Marci befriend me? That was a really crappy thing to do.”

“What? I thought you’d like having a friend.”
