“That’s exactly what I’m saying. She acted on her own.”

Traitor.

The word coming from Marcie pushed into her mind loud and clear.

Becca turned to look at her and their eyes met, and she knew without a doubt, Emerich ordered the hit.

She turned back to him. “Who was going to be next? My sisters? Everyone on our team? Were you planning on killing them all?”

“Of course not,” he denied, but the lie was right there on his lips, easy for her to read.

“I don’t believe you,” she told him.

He pulled his gun away from Cameron, pointed it at Marcie, and fired.

“No!” Becca screamed as Marcie hit the ground. “What have you done?”

Emerich shrugged. “Proving to you that I don’t accept traitors in my midst. She acted on her own and she paid the price.”

Becca dropped to Marcie’s side. The bullet had ripped through her shoulder. “I’m so sorry.”

Tears filled Marcie’s eyes. “I can’t believe he shot me.”

“We need to get her to a hospital,” Becca said as Cameron leaned down next to her and started to apply pressure to Marcie’s wound.

“She’s bleeding bad,” Cameron said.

“Emerich!” Becca yelled. “You have to fly her to the hospital.”

“You have people coming. Let them deal with her. Now, keep up your end of the deal. Let’s go before they get here. Now.” He turned to walk back to the Jeep.

Becca stood to follow.

Cameron jumped to his feet and grabbed her hand. “Becca, no. You can’t go.”

Emerich kept walking, but his guards were still pointing their guns at them and she had no doubt they were told to fire if she didn’t comply. Before Emerich reached the Jeep, Kyle flew into the meadow. His helicopter flew low, the blades beating the air around them.

“Fire!” Emerich yelled.

The men started firing. Kyle lifted the helicopter and banked right, flying fast over the trees and away from the meadow.

“No!” Becca screamed, running toward Emerich. “Genie’s on board.”

Emerich held up his arm and the men stopped. “Get in the Jeep, Becca.”

“Becca, no!” Cameron yelled. His heart sank as he watched her hurrying toward Emerich and the Jeep. He knew she would do anything to save them. Even sacrifice herself. “Don’t do it!”

Within seconds she was with Emerich and the caravan of Jeeps was driving across the meadow, back toward the compound. They’d been so close to escaping, and now she was lost to him again.

His heart sank and he dropped to his knees and again applied pressure to Marcie’s shoulder.

“He won’t hurt her,” she assured him. “He’s obsessed with her.”

“Somehow, that doesn’t make me feel any better,” he muttered.

Kyle and Genie swooped back in, but instead of landing in the meadow, they continued after the Jeeps. The door of the helicopter opened, and Genie leaned out, aiming an M134 Minigun out the side. Within seconds she’d sprayed all the Jeeps except the one Becca was in.

The noise was deafening. One by one, the Jeeps flipped into the air and burst into smoke and flames. Within minutes the meadow was littered with burning debris. Emerich’s Jeep came to an abrupt stop and the driver fled into the woods.
