“Dead,” Cameron said.

As soon as he said the word, the guards surrounding them got up and hurried out of the room.

“Hold on,” Cameron said loudly. He saw the guard who had taken his gun and walked over to him. “I think you have something that belongs to me.”

The guard looked at him, contemplating his next move.

“It’s government property. You’d be wise to return it. Soon, this place will be crawling with Feds.”

The man pulled it out of his pocket and handed it to him, then left the room. Cameron put the gun in his waistband and walked back to Becca and the Debis.

“Good job,” Becca said.

Cameron grinned. “Yeah, I can sound authoritative when I need to.”

“Is it true? Is Emerich really dead?” the real Debi asked, sounding scared.

“Yes, but we can still help you if you let us.” Cameron pulled his card out of his wallet and handed it to her.

“Are there any more patients here?” Becca asked. “Or doctors?”

The woman they’d met in the bar in Oregon shook her head. “No. Debi is the only one. Marcie just forwarded Emerich your list the other day. Once he had the others, he was going to bring in the scientists.”

“So this huge facility…?” Becca asked.

“It’s empty. It was his father’s.”

“Who are you, and how do you play into this?” Cameron asked.

She stood and held out her hand. “I’m Connie.”

Cameron’s brow crinkled. “Connie. I don’t remember that name from any of my lists.”

“I’m not on them. I’m a friend, someone he met in school who believes in his cause.”

“I don’t remember you,” Becca said.

“No, you wouldn’t. You didn’t get close to people,” she said.

Becca couldn’t believe she’d been working with Emerich all this time. “Well, you’re right about that.”

Cameron took out his phone. “We’re shutting this place down. If you don’t want trouble, you should head out.”

Connie nodded. “You don’t have to tell me twice.” She turned to Debi. “You want a ride?”

Debi nodded.

“Wait,” Becca said. “Before you go. Where are all Emerich’s records?”

“This way.” Connie led Becca and Cameron into Emerich’s offices where they found dozens of boxes of old files from the CTA days. “I don’t want to leave these here,” Becca said.

“You can load them in one of the SUVs. Keys are in the drawer. I’m taking one of the SUVs myself.” Connie opened the drawer and took out one set of keys and tossed the second one to Cameron.

“Lead the way,” he said to her. He picked up Emerich’s computer and took it down to one of the vehicles in the garage. After they made sure the building was empty, they called Kyle to come back. “How’s Marcie?” he asked.

“She’s lost a lot of blood but she’ll make it,” Kyle said.

“Good. I want her arrested for attempted murder.”
