Page 8 of Becca's Trouble

The ground next to him exploded, sending dirt flying across his shoes.

“They’re shooting,” Cameron yelled, pulled out his gun, and started zigzagging as the shots continued to pepper the ground around him.

A shot sounded from behind him as Marcie shot back. He made it to the boathouse. Kyle was already inside, had the boat keys, and was jumping into the boat. He turned the ignition and they all jumped inside as the boat roared to life.

The boat tore out of the boathouse and raced toward the fishing vessel that had already turned to leave. Bullets whizzed past them. Cameron saw three men on board as the boat pulled away, putting more distance between them.

Cameron immediately realized his mistake. “That is no fishing vessel.”

Emerich once more had them outmaneuvered and outgunned.

Chapter3

Becca kept her gaze on the boat as they sped across the water. These were Emerich’s men—she was sure of it. But what was their intention? Were they just spying on her? Or did they want to hurt her? She looked down at the blood seeping through her fingers and squeezed tighter. She had to make a decision. Should she read the team in? Or go it alone?

One thing was certain. Time was running out.

They followed the other vessel long enough to realize they weren’t going to catch them. Cameron spun the boat around and headed back toward the house. She didn’t know if she was annoyed or relieved.

They had to find Emerich and stop him.

“Becca! Your arm!” Marcie yelled.

Everyone turned her way to see what she was talking about. Genie moved to the seat next to her. Cameron’s eyes were heavy with concern as he saw the blood oozing from her arm.

“It’s okay. It just grazed me,” Becca assured him. She tried to play it off as nothing, but her arm was starting to sting as Genie grabbed a towel and pressed it against the wound.

Cameron hit the accelerator hard, and the front of the boat lifted as it tore across the water’s surface back toward the boathouse. Five minutes later, he was pulling inside. As soon as he parked and turned off the engine, he jumped out of the driver’s seat and crouched before her, examining her arm.

His gaze was intent, his touch soft. The caress of his fingertips sent a chill moving across her skin. She bit her lip and tried to ignore the urge to lean into his arms and let him comfort her.

“Does it hurt?” he asked.

For a long moment, she lost herself in the azure blue of his eyes, then quickly came back to herself as the burning sensation grew to a piercing pain . “Um. No. It’s just a scratch,” she lied through gritted teeth.

“My sister is tough,” Genie said, pulling the towel away from her wound. “A hail of bullets isn’t going to stop her.”

Becca grinned. “Yeah, what she said.”

Genie stood and held out her hand. “Come on, let’s get you to the house so we can dress your wound.” Becca took her hand and stepped out of the boat.

Kyle hurried before them. “Let me check the grounds first before you walk out into the open. There could be more of them out there.” He quickly left the boathouse.

“We’re going to have to increase our security,” Cameron said as he led them to the door and peeked out, checking the surrounding area. “We’re out in the open and completely exposed from here to the house.”

“There isn’t much we can do about that,” Genie said as the sound of a vehicle approaching reached them.

Kyle pulled up in a Polaris 4x4. “Want a ride?” he asked with a grin.

“Perfect,” Genie said, smiling. “You found my dad’s favorite toy. He’d go all over the island in that thing.”

“I know. I finally got my chance to drive it.”

They all climbed inside and drove back to the house. As they hurried into the kitchen, Genie grabbed the first aid kit that was still lying on the counter.

“We need more cameras.” Cameron continued walking into a side room off the kitchen that held several monitors with images of the estate flashing across the screens.

“Is there any footage of the mailbox out front?” Genie asked, following Cameron into the room.
