She shook her head. “I’m going to go out and look more. My search got suspended when we found Shainya.”

“I got a call from Mike in Houghton.”

“The orthopedic surgeon?”

“Right. He invited us to dinner on Wednesday to discuss next steps. Can you get a sitter?”

“I’m sure I can. Byusyou mean he invited me specifically?”

“He told me to bring my significant other. That would be you.”

“Where are we going?”

“If you’re worried about what to wear, you look beautiful in anything. We’re supposed to meet at Joey’s Seafood & Grill.”

“Dress jeans will be okay then.” She clasped her hands together. “You’re getting an offer! It’s really happening.”

“Whoa, don’t get your hopes up. I should have told him right away about Olivia’s arrest and how that is likely to affect me. I wanted to tell him, but I couldn’t get the words out. Once he hears about it, I’m probably sunk.”

Her blue eyes softened. “Maybe he’ll want you anyway. He’s got to know you’re an excellent surgeon.”

“He checked my references and said he was impressed. Butif the police show up here asking questions, it could boomerang onto the practice.”

“You could call the police yourself and offer to answer any questions. Have you talked to Mason about it?”

“No. You think he could help?”

“He could speak with the detective in charge of the case and see if they’re investigating you too.”

“There’s noifabout it. I’m sure they are. They’ll want to see what the rest of us know or saw. I’m surprised they haven’t called yet.”

“She was just arrested three days ago. It will take time to work their way through everyone.”

Annie was right, but it was hard to wait for the next shoe to drop. Every time he saw an unfamiliar car pull up to the bed-and-breakfast, he held his breath. “Maybe I should just call. Get it over with.”

“Like right now?”

“It’s not that late.”

He pulled out his phone and looked up the number of the Rochester precinct. When someone answered the phone, he explained that he needed to talk to the detective in charge of the investigation. A few moments later, he was transferred to Detective Ken Perry.

“Detective, I’m Dr.Jon Dunstan. I heard about the arrest of Dr.Olivia Thompson. I’m a former partner in the practice and thought I’d better check in.”

“Former? I heard you were one of the partners.” The man’s voice was gruff like a smoker’s, and he took a long slurp of a drink.

“Technically, I am, but I had notified them last week that Iwould be moving to Michigan. At that time I had no clue this was brewing.”

“Uh-huh. I’m recording this conversation, just so you’re aware.”

“That’s fine.”

“Why did you leave the practice? Did you observe Dr.Thompson murder a patient?”

The suspicion was obvious in the detective’s voice. “Nothing like that. I had the utmost respect for Dr.Thompson. I find it hard to believe she would do what she’s accused of. My father had a stroke, and I brought him to Michigan to take care of business. While here, I reconnected with my former fiancée, and we are getting back together.” He kissed Annie’s hand. “I don’t have a new position here yet, but I’m working on it. I let Dr.Thompson know immediately.”

“Did you ever observe Dr.Thompson with a patient?”

“No. We all had separate patients. I never had a case where I needed her consult, and she never asked me for one either. She’s been a respected surgeon for a long time. Frankly, I think you’re wrong.”
