I thought for a second it was maybe some kind of setup.

Him giving me the wrong location.

Or him getting me somewhere so we could finally have the fight that had been building for years.

There were large television screens above the bar.

Playing sports highlights.

The wall of liquor on the back wall was lit up by dim lights.

Floor to ceiling with choices.

And even a ladder with wheels, like you’d see at a library.

A few people looked at me.

They looked away and looked back again.

To my left, I saw Remi.

Standing near a table, arms folded, looking as miserable as ever.

Remi was alone.

I balled my hands up into fists and took a breath.

I approached Remi, actually waiting for him to attack.

“Who chose this place?” I asked.

“Abel,” Remi said.

“And where is Abel?”

Remi shrugged his boulder-sized shoulders.

He kept his distance. He didn’t move an inch.

I kept my distance too.

The two of us staring. Eyeing each other up.

I looked at my phone.

“Seems like everyone is late,” I said.

“Yup,” Remi said.

That’s when my phone vibrated.

And I heard Remi’s phone vibrate too.

Remi and I didn’t look at our phones right away.

We looked at each other.

His nostrils flared.
