A train under the tree.

Presents.

The smell of pine in the air.

Everyone in good spirits - and drinking even better spirits.

Remi and I know to keep our distance.

I don’t even remember how it happens.

But it just does.

It’s always something stupid.

A glance. A wink. A smile. A glare.

The absolute smallest of gestures - meaningful or not - and it’s like dropping a match into a bucket of gasoline.

Nobody is to blame because we both hate each other that much.

As time ticks on I find myself hating Remi for not appreciating I saved him. I feel guilty for not saving the others. It weighs on me a lot.

For Remi, he’s just mad all the time.

I’m not the only one who knows this.

Anyone who gets close to Remi knows it.

His teammates. His coaches.

His agent and lawyer.

And look at us…

We made it.

We’re big time now.

We’re making real money.

REAL MONEY!

Seven figures a year!

And yet…

Someone says something, then Remi and I start fighting again.

Throwing punches. Pushing one another.

Remi grabs the front of my shirt, picks me up and throws me.

Right into the Christmas tree.

I hit and bounce.

I feel the real pine needles digging at my clothes and skin.
