I started to laugh.

We were both idiots.

And I wondered which one of us was going to make it to Fiona alive.

Chapter Forty-Two

RIFF

Remi got back to his feet and threw the stick at me.

He kept going.

The dirt road led to the main road.

We could have just walked that until we got to a gas station.

Remi had the same thought I had, even though we both didn’t speak it.

Two hockey players walking along the side of a road.

The same two hockey players who had gotten into a fight on the ice, during a game.

Now I could spin that story easily.

Remi and I were bonding. Working out our issues.

Even still, I didn’t feel like dealing with it.

Neither did Remi.

He walked toward an incline.

I used my phone to figure out that on the other side of the incline was a gas station.

A shortcut.

Even though it would take a little climbing up and then descending down to get to the gas station parking lot.

It’s simple.

Buy a gas can. Fill it up. Walk it back to my car. Put some gas in the car. Drive again.

“You’re a mountain climber!” I called out to Remi.

He lifted both middle fingers.

“You know, this is going to make one hell of a story to tell,” I said. “Maybe you can tell it during the wedding.”

Remi froze and looked back. “What did you just say?”

“What? When I marry your sister, you’ll be in the wedding party. Maybe you can still be my best man. Even though I wasn’t invited to your wedding. None of us were. Remember that? When you got married to a total stranger? But everyone was okay with that, right? They had no choice but to be okay with it.”

Remi turned. “You’re not marrying my sister. She would never get engaged to you.”

“How do you know I haven’t asked her yet? She could be wearing a giant diamond ring right now.”

“Never.”
