“I’m in,” I said, taking the glass Clementine handed me and took my first sip. Nothing had changed, and the storm cloud was still over all our heads, but it was nice to have a moment where none of that mattered.

We could just be free and happy.

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

____________

WRAITH

SO MUCH FOR LUCKY CLOVERS

Something was wrong. I walked into the church andfeltit. No one was here except the Silver and the others, and they looked at me in unison.

A darkness gripped my soul, preparing for the worst. “Let me guess,” I called out as I walked down the aisle. “The four of you finally decided to kill me.”

Comet smirked. “No. But you’re going to want to kill someone.”

“What happened?”

Silver spoke, and suddenly ringing filled my ears. My shadows floated off my skin and coated me in darkness. “Where is he?”

“Hold yourself,” Silver said and nodded to Delta. “There’s more.”

Delta tossed me his phone. “Take a look.”

I scrolled through screenshots of a conversation. It went backyears. “Who is he talking to?”

“One of the Legion members. I went all the way back. They’ve been friends before either of them were patched in. But things started to spiral a while ago. Turns out Four-leaf isn’t as happy with things as we thought.” He jerked his chin to the phone again. “Look at the last.”

The text exchange was from a few days ago, right after our impromptu church.

Silver’s not going to pull the trigger. If you guys want a fight you’ll have to do better than that.

You want a fight?

Of course I do. Better than us all being pussies over a five mile strip of land. Over some fucking dancer. They were right. I didn’t want to believe they were right, but they were.

I’ll see what I can do.

Be careful. Don’t let them know it’s you.

We’re not that stupid. You want to help?

I’m not that stupid. Just get it done.

I looked up. “Who is ‘they’?”

“Don’t know.” Delta crossed his arms, looking pissed. “Nothing in any of their conversations gives a clue. Must have been in person.”

Silver’s energy was dark. Maybe as dark as mine. “The magic on him wasn’t enough to be forced. There’s nothing to say he volunteered or agreed to attack Sky, but they didn’t have to work hard to make it happen.”

That alone was enough for me to rip his fingernails off one by one.

“So I figure we’ll ask him some questions during church,” he said lightly. “And then you get to have some fun.”

My mouth curled into a grin. “Excellent.”

The members began to file in, and I stepped to the side, leaning against the walls of the church. My mind whirled around the new reality.
