I swallowed. Yeah, that was why I was hiding. My birthday was two days away. And so was the confrontation. The Legion were going to light a big piece of this city on fire because of me, and people were going to die. It made me sick to think about.

“How about this?” I said, forcing a smile on my face. “I show you what this floating pole can do, and then I’ll finally beg you.”

His eyes took on the glow of power I loved, followed by a gaze sliding down my body like a path of sunlight, even though he was made of shadow. “Show me.”

I found the song I wanted and changed it on the speakers. Slow and sensual—the kind of song I didn’t usually dance to because it felt different. It feltpersonaland vulnerable, neither of which I wanted when I was on stage.

Catching the pole, I let it take me in a circle like I could fly, arching my back and letting go all over again. Simple beauty. Long movements that were less about dancing and more about moving through the air with grace. The world slipped to the sidelines as I danced.

I felt likefae.

Tears came to my eyes, and I lowered myself to kick off the ground and do one more circle of flight before slowing and coming to a stop where Silver now stood to catch me and lower me off the pole.

“That was beautiful,” he whispered.

I held him tight for a moment that was infinite, letting the emotion pass through me before I pulled back. “Please, Silver.”

He smirked. “Please what?”

“Put me on my knees.”

One of his hands wove into my hair, holding onto me while I sank to the floor.

This wasn’t a humiliation, and it wasn’t forced. It felt…

I pushed away the thoughts that triggered shame and clung to what Wraith told me. I was so much more than this and what the world had taught me to be.

There was nothing shameful about this.

Especially when Silver looked down at me, love shining through his eyes. His hand slid out of my hair to touch my cheek.

I reached for his belt, and he caught my wrist. “Not yet, baby girl.”

“I thought—”

“I said I would put you on your knees. Not anything about sucking my cock.” He smirked. “Not that I have a problem with that, and I’ll welcome it. That’s not what you need tonight.”

One second we were in the studio, my music playing, the next shadows swept in from all sides and we were in the same positions in his bedroom, my phone on the floor beside me.

Silver sat on the bed, and I leaned into him, resting against his leg. “That’s what you need,” he said.

“I don’t know why.”

“I do.”

He pulled me up slowly, spreading me out on his bed and kissing me in the same way. Everything about him seemed content to be slow and soft. I didn’t mind it. “Tell me.”

“You need a place to be safe, baby girl. That submission we told you about? Between you and I, it’s more than being mates. I’m your king, and you’re my queen.”

A gasp slipped out of me. “What?”

He laughed, kissing the place Wraith had left a bruise on my neck. “Did you think theâmmeluneto the King of Shadows would be anything less?”

“I hadn’t thought about it at all,” I told him honestly. “My mind’s been a little occupied.”

Shadows covered us again, sliding over my skin like silk and leaving us naked together. Silver slid his hands over my body with no signs of going faster, just enjoying the feel of me. I did the same to him.

“You are my queen,” he whispered. “The moment you become immortal, you take your place. And that’s why it’s different. There is no one above you but me. You will never be on your knees for anyone but me and your mates. But being at the top comes with a cost.”
