I closed my eyes, dreading whatever he said next. Hadn’t I already paid enough?

“When you rule, there are few places you can be truly safe. That’s what you are when you’re on your knees for me, baby girl. The one place in this world I swear to you willalwaysbe safe.

“I don’t care what happens. If we’re pissed at each other or you’re sad and hurting. If you’re the happiest you’ve ever been. No matter where we are or what’s happening around us, you will be safe on your knees with me.”

Sinking my hands into his hair, I raised an eyebrow. “So I’m not safe if I’m standing.”

His hand, low on my hip, moved to give my ass a gentle smack. “I see you, Skyla. I see all of you. Even when you deflect and try to be a brat because you’re afraid of your feelings. Of course you’re safe standing, and you know that. But that space? That simple peace you felt when you knelt? We’re going to keep that sacred for us. We both need it.” He smiled quickly. “Not everything is about sex.”

“Just most things.” Still, my soul eased, and I understood what he meant. To have a place I could trust despite the shifting world around us. Something constant. That was everything.

Silver slid his arms beneath me, cradling my body even as his weight held me down. “This is my vow to you as a king to his queen. You will always be safe with me. I will destroy anyone who touches you and offer you their heart. I will offer you the world, as best as I’m able, and make it up to you in orgasms when I can’t. I will love you for as long as I am alive.”

Silver’s words settled in my chest. Wrapped around me like a blanket. “Wow.”

“No matter what happens in two days, nothing will happen to you. I promise, baby girl.”

“I love you.” The words came out soft and feathered against his lips. Because I heard his promise, and I knew he meant it, but there was a sinking sensation in my gut that he wouldn’t be able to keep it.

We sank deeper into each other, slow heat and burning kisses until neither of us could hold back any longer.

I surrendered to my king.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

____________

SKYLA

NEW MOON

Where the fuck were they?

After a night being bathed in Silver’s love and power, I woke up alone. A shower, meal, and Cream Puff play session later, I still hadn’t seen any of my mates.

On one hand, it made sense. Frenzied energy ran through the compound with last-minute preparations. Tomorrow was the day. We might be trapped in here, under siege by the Legion, or maybe they would be drawn out in their plan to destroy No Man’s Land. I wasn’t sure. All I knew was the Legion had continued to be suspiciously absent, and I wasn’t to be included in the preparations.

They were probably busy. I still wanted to see them.

No matter where I looked, they weren’t anywhere. Not the clubhouse or the office. Not in the church or infirmary, and their bikes sat in the plaza. They werehere, but they were missing.

“Looking for yourlovers?”

I turned around to find the man who stared at me in the clubhouse when Wraith touched me. He didn’t look much friendlier. I took a step back.

He held up his hands. “I’m not your biggest fan, Skyla, but I’m not going to hurt you. I’m Bookend.”

“Yeah, the angry looks you keep giving me clued me in to the first bit.”

Swearing under his breath, he ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah. You’ve fucked things up, okay? Before Silver and the rest saw you in that club, this MC was a well-oiled machine. Things have been different since they met you. Less focused. I’m not surprised the Legion is pulling all this shit. I liked the way things were, and you’re the only one who made it different, so…” he shrugged. “Sorry, not sorry.”

I stared at him, now not afraid. Silver’s words lived in my head and in my heart. And even more, I felt the difference in myself. The Skyla I’d been so desperately searching for and clinging to? She was gone. I was here, more than I ever was.

“I can accept that,” I said. “But tomorrow, I will be Queen of Shadows, and though I have no standing in this club, I will still be your queen. You don’t have to like me, but I expect your respect.”

He laughed once. “Silver’s rubbing off on you.”

“Or maybe this is who I am. You don’t know me, Bookend. Where are my mates?”
