Silver ran his thumb over my skin where he held my arm. “You will have bruises, baby girl. More than you have now. So think carefully. You know none of us would ever force you...”

“But this is different,” I finished for him, and understood what he was saying, and what he wasn’t. The new moon unlocked the deepest, most raw, and most feral version of our spirits, and human concepts like consent were no longer a part of the picture. Running with the knowledge of what would happenwasconsent.

“We’ll fuck you and breed you until you’re so covered in cum you’re unrecognizable,” Comet’s voice wasn’t one I recognized.

“You know I can’t—”

He snorted inelegantly. “As if that matters. Still want to fill you up and watch that greedy pussy drink our seed. Watch it make you crave it more.”

Hybrids couldn’t reproduce. Just the way it was. I knew that much. And it made the carnal words he spoke even more appealing. I knew, too, that it was the new moon pulling words he’d never said before out of him.

I didn’t mind it.

My whole body flushed. “Right, then. I guess I’ll be going.”

Someone snickered, and I couldn’t pinpoint who. I followed their instructions exactly, moving smoothly and evenly back up the stairs and out.

I didn’t feel like being around anyone else. With my birthday tomorrow and everything soclose, I wanted my mates.

“Hey, you.”

Cream Puff napped on my bed, completely stretched out. Curling up beside her, I listened to her purr until I began to doze.

She woke me later by purring so close to my face I couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s your secret plan to smother me, isn’t it? That’s what you want? Well, you shouldn’t, because I’m the one who feeds you.”

A little meow came back. Lifting her up, she fluttered her wings. Soon she’d be flying around and my anxiety would go through the roof.

We played for a while. I went and ate a killer grilled cheese sandwich in the dining room. Took a bath and read more of my book, but even things I liked couldn’t remove the restlessness I felt.

Finally giving up, I retreated to my room and changed into one of the long, silky nightgowns that were in the closet. This one was a cool silver, shining like the moon that wasn’t there.

Darkness fell.

No one came to see me, and they wouldn’t. Tonight was the new moon, and for the same reasons they would chase me if I ran, they would snap into that, even in my bedroom. But I missed them.

It wasn’t midnight yet. I no longer felt like two different sides of myself. Instead, it felt like I was being held back. I needed torunand get out of my fucking skin. For a second I thought about going down to the studio and pushing my body again because sleep wasn’t going to happen.

I was too hot and too needy, now used to nights filled with pleasure. Turning, I couldn’t get comfortable. Even withoutathanasíamy entire being wanted to be out under the dark and empty sky. My fae rising and responding to the truth of who I was. The decision was made before I realized I was getting out of bed and opening the window on the back side of the building.

No doubt they would feel the shiver in the wards, and know. They would chase me and take me, and I wanted every second. Stretching myself down as far as I could, I dropped to the concrete below. The woods were in front of me. I was whole, and I was theirâmmelune. If I didn’t give myself to them tonight, I would regret it forever.

A smile took over my face, and I ran.

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

____________

SILVER

RUN, BABY GIRL, RUN

Of course she fucking ran.

I saw the interest in her eyes when she asked what would happen. The same interest she had when I told her we all liked to chase.

My senses opened, the feral need toclaimrising.

The others were on the move as well. I’d barely been keeping myself away from her as it was. Now?
