CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR

____________

SKYLA

ONCE YOU BELONG TO THE SHADOWS…

All of my mates stared at me. I shuddered under the attention, knowing they wanted me more than anything, and at the same time sensing their anger and despair.

“Skyla,” Silver said, coming to kneel in front of me. “Baby girl. Why thefuckwould you do that?”

“You know why.”

“We do,” Comet said. “But that doesn’t mean we’re any less pissed about it.”

I shook my head. “I had to.”

Delta’s hands crept up my ribs from where he held me. “We know.”

Silver lifted my wrist to his mouth, kissing the inside of it. “Are you going to discipline me?”

“Yes,” he nodded. “For this? I think each of us will choose our own—but I don’t have it in me for discipline today. There are other things I want to do.”

The knowledge settled in my chest, and it felt right. I had done exactly what they told me not to. This was the consequence. Now that my humanity was gone, there was no hesitation. The rules were clear and natural. They set the rules, and I broke them.

“Remember what I said, princess,” Wraith whispered. “I told you if you ever put yourself in danger again I would spend an entire day spanking every inch of your body. Maybe I’ll tie you down this time.”

Heat flooded through me. I shouldn’t be excited for something which was a punishment. But Ineededit. Everything I felt with him made sense now. These desires were part of me. Larger and brighter than they were yesterday. Simply who I was, and I would never hold it back.

“Speaking of princess,” I looked at Wraith. “Shouldn’t you call me queen, now?”

He smirked. “You’ll always be my princess.”

Grave coughed a laugh. “If there was any doubt you’re the queen, the eyes put it to bed.”

“What?”

I got up and went to the bathroom, stopping dead at the sight of my eyes glowing like sapphires in the dimness. They’d glowed before when I looked at him, but I assumed it was residual magic fromathanasía. “What does it mean?”

“You’ve never wondered why my eyes do what they do?” Silver asked. “It’s a sign of royalty.”

“Oh.” I couldn’t stop staring at myself. “Honestly, no. I thought it was because you’re powerful.”

He laughed. “I’ll take it as a compliment, but no. It’s because I am the King. And you are the Queen. I need to thank you, baby girl, because I cannot wait for the Court of Sunlight to find out about you.”

“Why?”

I came back to the center of them, unsure where to go, wanting to touch all of them at once.

“Call your power,” Silver instructed.

The sparkling light came to my fingertips. Less powerful than when I’d called everything to me this morning, but still stunning.

“How much do you remember about last night?” Comet asked.

I flushed. “Enough.”

“How about the part where your magic broke through and you lit up the woods like it was daylight?” Delta asked. “Because that was incredible.”
