Warlocks weren’t necessarily born. They could be made just as humans could be made into fae. If they were offered prospects? As a warlock and having access to infinite, powerful sex? Enough desperate men lived in this city and outside of it to take that deal.

We needed to protect the other people in Skyla’s life. “Send someone to Maggie and protect her. Now.”

Someone’s footsteps retreated—I didn’t care who it was. They would get it done.

I turned back to the kneeling men and drew my gun. Their faces didn’t matter. “You have one chance, and exactly one chance, to tell me something to save your lives. And you better make it good.”

My voice echoed over the plaza, deathly silence surrounding us. None of them made a sound or even moved. Maybe they were enchanted, and if they were, it was unfortunate. But no one made them take a deal which was a guaranteed death.

“I want all nine of them,” I told Wraith. “Including the others from earlier, lined up on their side of No Man’s Land. Right on the border, like toy soldiers. Don’t set foot over the line. They want to send pawns into battle? We’ll show them we know they’re pawns.”

“Consider it done.”

“Time’s up,” I bellowed, striding to the first in the line and pressing the gun to his hood-covered face. “Consider this a lesson. If you fight the Shadows, the shadow of your corpse is all that remains.”

I pulled the trigger.

Six times.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

____________

SKYLA

AFTER MIDNIGHT

Iwinced as Rocketman’s power dug into my shoulder, removing the last shard of glass from my skin and healing the cut. “Thank you.”

He chuckled. “Don’t thank me, Sky. Pretty sure the Pres would take my head off if I didn’t return you in pristine condition.”

“I wouldn’t let him hurt you.”

“That’s kind of you to say.”

I frowned as he double checked my shoulder blade. “Does it bother you? Living like that?”

“Like what?”

“That Silver could just kill you for no reason, even if you did your best.”

Rocketman crossed the infirmary and tossed away the bloody gauze in his hands. “Silver is as fair as a president as he is a king. Strict, but fair. I understand our instincts, Skyla. He’s protecting what is his. That includes you, this compound, and all the members. He has to make the hard decisions to keep all of us safe and protected, and if I ever fuck up enough to become a casualty of that? I will have deserved it.”

The healer had seen to Clementine first. Her wounds were deeper, and she still slept. Now with one of the younger prospects by her side. Rocketman promised he would tell me as soon as she woke. The guys would want to hear what she said.

But while I waited, I sat in this room, dress torn, Silver’s cum smeared on my thighs, unsure of what to do or think. Everything in me responded to the feral leader he’d become in that moment.

Ishouldn’twant that.

Ishouldn’twant to be put in my place, because it told me how deeply they cared about me.

Ishouldn’tcrave the power which held me down and took me without mercy.

But I did.

Wrapping my arms around my middle, I pulled my feet up onto the exam table and leaned my head on my knees.

All these years imagining what it would be like with them, and it was so different.Somuch better, yet my heart still stuttered with the idea of ‘supposed to.’ Would that fall away when I became immortal? They were my mates, and this was part of that.
