Silver was right. I had fucked up by running out there unprotected right after I told them I wouldn’t.

Confusion and unease swirled around me. It was so new, I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t know enough about it. I wasn’t going to stop being me and fighting with them. Neither could I deny the piece of me which surrendered to them so deeply it felt like I was a new person.

“That’s quite the face.”

“I guess.”

He laughed. “Up for some advice?”

“Sure.”

“You’ve been a hybrid your whole life, but in hiding, right?”

I nodded into my knees.

“You haven’t experienced your fae side yet. Not really. And you won’t, untilathanasía, if you choose that path. Jumping in with five immortal fae who fully embrace their instincts is going to take some getting used to. Don’t judge yourself while you do.”

“That was actually good advice.”

“It’s rare, but it can happen.”

Outside, gunshots fired. Six of them, one after another. My blood ran cold. The shots weren’t frenzied, they were methodical. It wasn’t a second attack.

“I need to go back to the apartment building,” I told Rocketman. “I don’t think Silver would want me walking alone.”

“I’ll take you.” He gestured to the door and pulled out a gun I didn’t know he had. The entire club congregated near the gate. I couldn’t see through the crowd of bodies, but something was happening, and my mates were at the center of it.

Rocketman escorted me across the courtyard to the door of the apartment building. “You’ll tell me when she’s awake?”

“I will. But it won’t be till tomorrow. Her head got hit pretty hard. It’s better for her to stay under for now.”

“Okay.”

He turned to walk away.

“Thank you, Rocketman.”

The face bowed to me and winked. “Anything for the leaders’ girl.”

Magic buzzed against my skin as I opened the door. The invisible wards which protected the building. I would be safe here.

His advice swirled around my mind as I padded to the common room. My heels were somewhere out in the plaza. Hopefully tomorrow I could find them. Tomorrow, when I was still getting used to all of this.

The pure, raw need Silver revealed to me… they were getting used to things too. None of this would be easy. I would push back on things that weren’t fair, but I also wasn’t going to fight their animal instincts to protect their mate when I was the one who triggered them in the first place.

I stripped off my dress and folded it, putting it aside. It was torn, but fixable. Maybe I’d just buy another one.

It wasn’t midnight yet, but I didn’t want to go anywhere else.

The common room was decorated in gentle shades of gold. They were cool in the dimness. I hadn’t turned the light on. Whatever confusion I had in my mind, I chose to follow the instincts I’d been ignoring my whole life.

I knelt in the middle of the floor. More than that, I touched my forehead to the floor and closed my eyes.

Yes.

Fighting the anxiety which sprang up in my chest, I held back my judgment of myself. It would take time.

I began to float and drift as I waited, not moving. Strangely peaceful, and the soft carpet I rested on was comfortable. I almost laughed, imagining their faces if I complimented their choice of carpet for the comfort of my knees. But that was it, because I felt heavy. Aching and confused. Ready, too.
