“Because I’m well aware you threatened Dr. Davidson.” Detective Barker was positively salivating, his eyes shifting back and forth as he gauged my reaction.

“I’m sorry to hear that. While Ernest and I had our issues, I considered him a friend.”

“Did you now?” He glanced around the room then shifted his gaze down my clothes. “Why don’t you tell me about the girls?”

“The girls? I’m not certain where you’re going with this.”

“Come now, Mr. McKenzie. I’m well aware of your past.”

“What is the meaning of this?” After Lark stormed into the room, her arms folded, she pushed her way past the police officer.

“Ms. Winston. Why am I not surprised to see you here?” Detective Barker chided.

“I don’t think I like your attitude, Detective…” she started, resisting looking into my eyes. If she had, she would have seen my clear warning.

Even though I was glad to have her on my side, the woman more tenacious than most men I had to deal with.

“Barker. I’m merely asking your… friend some questions. That’s what you are, right? Just a friend?” The way he looked at her infuriated me, enough so when I took a step closer, the officer placed his hand on his weapon.

I’d been goaded before and this wouldn’t be the last time. They wanted a reason to arrest me, which I refused to give them.

For now.

Lark threw up her hand, stepping closer to both men. “What I am is Mr. McKenzie’s attorney. As such, I will remain present during your interrogation.”

“Who said anything about an interrogation?” he spat at her.

“Oh, come now. Isn’t that what you’re doing here?” Her glare was venomous.

“Detective, if you have any specific questions, then ask. Otherwise, I’ll need you to leave.” I kept my hard glare pinned on him.

“Fine, Mr. McKenzie. Where were you last night between the hours of eight and midnight?”

“I was at Club Darkness enjoying an evening with friends.” Had Davidson gotten himself into the middle of something or had the underbelly used him in order to get to me?

“Can anyone corroborate your statement?” he challenged.

Lark moved in between us, pinning him with the savagery in her eyes. “I can. And before you ask, I was with him all day and all night. If you’re attempting to suggest that my client has anything to do with Dr. Davidson’s murder, then you’d be sorely wrong. I suggest you bark up another tree, Detective.”

While the man seemed surprised, he dared to gaze all the way down to her bare feet a second time. It was two times too many, my possessive nature slamming against all concept of common sense. I almost wrapped my hand around his throat when he took a step away.

Good boy.

He saved himself from a hard punch to the face.

“Ms. Winston,” he said, the determination I’d heard in his voice all but disappeared, “there are two women who died of strangulation as well as a prominent doctor in our community. I would think given your stance in that same community that you’d be concerned about yourclient’spast.”

“And what past would you be talking about, Detective?”

The glint in his eyes was the only sign of his excitement for spouting off a damaging history lesson. “I’m sorry, Ms. Winston. I thought you knew that Mr. McKenzie was once arrested for aggravated assault. But as you might imagine given his clout in the community, he got off without a single penalty. Isn’t that right, Mr. McKenzie?” He threw a look in my direction.

Before I had a chance to counter the ridiculousness of his statement, she pressed her hand against my chest. “I don’t see what one has to do with the other so please enlighten me.”

I’d been a fool to think I could shield her from the incident.

The detective grinned, gloating in the small win. “I’m so sorry. I thought you knew about Morgan Chase.”

“Who are you talking about?” she demanded. While her voice was strong, I could tell she was tenser than before.
