I shot him a look. “You’re right.”

“I’m always right. Besides, since you fucked up my flight, I figure I might as well solve the puzzle.”

Grinning, I’d always known I could count on the man. “You’re going to solve it, huh?”

“You bet I am. Maybe with your help.” He smiled but I could see concern remaining in his eyes. “I think your initial thought about Winston being behind this is where we need to start. If he destroys you, it’s only a matter of time before he’s able to put enough pressure on the city council in Miami to shut down my club.”

“Good point.”

“It’s been one of his re-election campaigns.”

The man was going too far. “That man is dirty.”

“Then let’s find something we can use. Deal?”

I laughed, although the ache in my gut refused to go away. “Deal. As long as you tell me what you really said to Lark.”

“Trade secret, my man. You won’t be able to get it out of me. I can tell you that she really digs you though.”

“Not any longer.”

He lost his grin. “Come on. Let’s make some coffee and get to work.”

There was an answer in the lists. My instincts had already told me that. Whoever was responsible for attempting to ruin my life would go down.

Lark

Four little words. The arrogant, opinionated, sexy man had left a message with four words and nothing more.

“We need to talk.”

No ‘I miss you’ or ‘please come back’ or anything lovey-dovey, period. His voice had been stern, as if commanding me to call him back. Hell, no. I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction, no matter if the ache in my heart was getting worse.

“Oh, you asshole!” I dropped my phone, leaning against the counter, staring through the living room toward the window. The afternoon was starting to fade, heading toward twilight and I’d spent hours trying to figure out what was going on.

And I was no closer, except for the creepy crawlies that remained lurking in the back of my mind. The last word Jeffrey had said just… people used the word ‘soon’ all the time. It had fit in the context with our conversation. I took another sip of my lemonade, my head aching from all the thoughts racing through my synapses.

Sadly, most of my afternoon had been spent missing Lachlan. The way the lightest brush of his fingers had created quivers. The way his hungry lips had devoured mine, his tongue determined to tame mine. And the way he’d driven his cock inside, his eyes never leaving mine.

That had been the second time he’d taken me and the third, the night the most incredible of my life.

Then he’d shoved me aside.

“Damn him.”

The visions of the man remained constant. He’d become my drug, being around him intoxicating. His scent continued to linger on my skin, so full of testosterone that I remained on a high. I was pathetic.

I purposely tried to turn off my burning desire, which was almost nearly impossible. At this point, the afternoon had been a bust. No call from Elite. No freaking idea what was going on. And no love of my life. The only good news was that my father had accepted my break in ties.

For now.

Groaning, I walked toward the window, shivering even though it had been a warm day. When I peered outside, my eyes were drawn across the street. Oh, hell, no. The bastard who’d been watching me had returned. I pressed my hand against the pane, my anger increasing to the point I could break the glass.

Instead, I turned my head toward the front door, half expecting to see another notice slipped underneath, breathing a sigh of relief when there wasn’t. When I looked back down at the sidewalk, whoever it was had left, disappearing into the crowd.

I backed away, the chill turning icy. Then I heard my phone and jumped. This was getting ridiculous. My pulse immediately increased and I started to race toward the kitchen. Then I stopped. What if Lachlan was calling again? I couldn’t talk to him. I had nothing to say.
