“Who are you really? What is this? You lied to me.”

Snarling, I slammed the door, jumping over the hood knowing she’d try to escape. Her door was already open when I slid inside, forcing me to grab and jerk her arm. “Close the fucking door, Lucia.” I shifted my gaze to the rearview mirror, noticing two dark SUVs headed down the street. We had no time to lose.

“No. This is crazy. You can’t do this.”

“Listen to me!” I was already out in the street, scanning the perimeter as I thought about the best way of getting out of the city. “Close the fucking door.”

She did so a split second before a car almost rammed into it, her moans escalating.

“What is happening? What?” She dropped her head into her hands, her entire body shaking.

“I’ll explain later. Stay down.”

“No! You tell me now. Now, goddamn it.” As she pummeled her fists against me, I tried to maintain control.

“Those men were sent to capture you, Lucia. And trust me, what they had planned wasn’t pleasant.” The fucking assholes were right on our tail, trying to maneuver themselves into a position that would box me in. Like hell that was going to happen.

She remained quiet for a few seconds, but her breathing was as labored as mine. “Where are you taking me?”

“Somewhere safe.”

She shot her head in my direction. “Is there anywhere safe? You used me. Are you working for my brother?”

“I told you before, no.”

I could tell she was thinking about my answer. The two SUVs remained too close for comfort, their aggressive actions causing an accident. Lucia gasped, gripping the dashboard as she craned her neck to witness the carnage. “Who are they?”

Chuckling, the ugly truth left bile in my throat. “I’m not sure.” Goddamn it. As I caught a glimpse of one of the assholes hanging out the window, pointing an assault weapon at us, I pushed her down hard. “Keep down!”

Even though I swerved, the back glass was shattered.

She yelped but remained where she was.

I slammed my foot on the accelerator, speeding around several additional cars, finally giving us some space. Shit. This was getting out of hand. When I let go, she reared up.

“You’re not sure? You’re fucking not sure? What is this? Who’s trying to kill us?” She reached over, grabbing the steering wheel, her force enough I had to fight to keep the vehicle from careening into cars parked near the curb.

I grabbed her around the throat, shaking my head. “I don’t have time to explain right now, Lucia. We’re being chased. If you want to live, you’ll do as I say.”

“Fuck you.”

Goddamn it. Her hardheadedness would get us killed. “You can trust me. You’ll need to do it right now or both of us will end up dead. Do you understand me?” I swerved around another curve, hitting the bridge crossing the river at over seventy miles per hour. I had to lose them quickly or I’d be forced to abandon the idea of taking her to the safehouse I’d already prepared. No one knew of its location, including my family.

“Trust you?” She laughed as she clawed my arm.

I took a deep breath, pressing down on the accelerator. At least I was gaining ground, the assailants no longer easy to spot in the rearview mirror. “There’s no one else.” The sound of my voice was bitter, the anger that had festered inside for so many years clawing at the surface.

“I don’t understand any of this.”

“I think you do.”

“Tell me what’s happening.”

“Be patient.” I maneuvered around another set of vehicles, making another turn.

She folded her arms, staring out the window. “We need to call the paramedics. I don’t want my brother to die.”

“You mean the man threatening your life and your business?”
