“Nooooo,” Cameron said. “Let’s swim at your house.”

“You’re going to have fun,” Faith said.

“I’ve got it covered. Where’s Sawyer?”

She started to wonder if Cade did this on purpose. As almost a payback that he’d send his mother over here to find out more about her relationship in case she one-upped him with the kids.

“He got called into work.”

“He had to go catch a bad guy,” Regan said.

Jolene smiled. “Everything okay?”

“An armed robbery or something. Not sure. He’ll be a while though.”

She did have a moment of panic that he could get hurt but then checked the news on her phone and saw the suspect was gone and at large. James and Sawyer weren’t looking for the guy but rather clues since this was the third one this month that fit the same MO.

He’d kissed her and apologized, then said it was a good thing they decided not to go to his other grandparents this weekend. That holiday weekends always made crime rise.

“Does that bother you?” Aunt Jolene asked.

“No,” she said. “Why would it? It’s his job.”

“But he could not be around much.”

“So,” she said. “I’m okay with that. It’s not a big deal.”

Her aunt frowned at her. As if she couldn’t make heads or tails of things or what to ask next. “Not all women like it when the guy they are dating is always pulled away.”

“I’m not all women and it doesn’t bother me. But maybe it bothers you. Maybe Uncle Gavin is right and Sawyer isn’t a good fit for me. Guess only time will tell. Seems to me that is what you are trying to figure out?”

“I want to swim, Grandma,” Cameron said again.

“Your grandchildren await,” she said. She felt like she got the upper hand here.

Her aunt said, “Gather your things, kids.” Aunt Jolene was looking at Fred. “You know, if you find a man to love like you do your dog, it fulfills your life more. Then maybe you can have kids like these two someday.”

“I’m good with my life the way it is,” she said. “The thing about a dog is you can train them to the way you want them. Men aren’t always that easy.”

Her aunt laughed as she expected and then left.

She didn’t feel that way, but she had to keep up this charade with her aunt for now.

“Did we beat you to it?”Carolyn asked into the phone later that night. Her sister-in-law, Diane, her husband, and her brother-in-law were sitting with them. Jolene and Gavin were at their house chilling like they normally did on Memorial Day weekend. No big party for them this holiday since the kids were working.

“Dang it,” Jolene said. “Are you going to tell me there was an engagement at the party today? What is it with your Memorial Day parties and engagements?”

“People go into labor at your parties,” Diane said.

“Good point,” Jolene said. “Who got engaged?”

“Jonah and Megan. Nothing on Faith and Sawyer?” Diane asked.

She sighed loudly. Today didn’t turn out the way she had hoped. It’d taken her a few weeks to wear Cade down to let Faith watch the twins. It was only luck that Alex had to go to work today so she could have Monday off and was short staffed.

“Nope. My niece keeps her distance from me and I have to pretty much beg my brother for information,” Jolene said.
