“That must rub you the wrong way,” Carolyn said.

“My family loves doing that to me. It’s all good. I’m still working it. Anything on Chloe and Royce?” Jolene asked.

“Nothing new to report there,” Carolyn said. “I’m just happy we got Megan and Jonah done. Diane and I didn’t do much with this one. The same with Chloe.”

“That’s right,” Grant said. “The men are the heroes for them.”

“Just like you put your foot in your mouth on New Year’s Eve?” Garrett said.

“Don’t remind me,” Grant said. “So we had a few hiccups, but it all ends well.”

“It does,” Jolene said. “Let's hope I get a good ending for my niece. I still think Faith cares more for her dog than she does for a man. Maybe that is the problem.”

“You work on her,” Carolyn said.

They hung up the phone and Jolene turned to Gavin. She’d seen the smirk on his face this whole time. “Say what is on your mind.”

“You can’t figure this one out,” he said. “I told you to let it ride. The more you push, the more she gets one step ahead of you.”

“I think she is onto the way you are playing this. She isn’t stupid, you know. Sawyer is a detective on top of it.”

“Could be right,” he said. “But be happy they are dating and let the rest fall into place. It’s all you can do.”

“That and try to line up the next person we need to work on.”

Gavin shook his head. “You really can’t give up, can you?”

“It’s way too much fun,” she said.

One Lucky Man

The following Saturday, Sawyer and Faith were driving to his grandparents’ house for a visit.

His grandfather was doing well and they wanted to meet Faith. He wasn’t going to spend the night even though they’d asked him to.

Staying there alone was one thing, with his girlfriend another.

He’d thought of getting a hotel room, but work was nuts and he was just happy to be able to get out of town for one day.

This also allowed Faith to not worry about Fred. They’d be home tonight and this wasn’t more than a workday in the dog’s eyes. If they’d gone overnight, Fred would have stayed at Connor and Lynn’s house.

James was covering for him in exchange for bringing Faith to dinner in two weeks. His best buddy had been on his case and he felt it was the least he could do. Even Sondra wanted to meet Faith.

“I’m glad your grandfather is feeling so well,” she said.

“He is. I haven’t seen him in a few months, but I talk to him all the time. The same with my grandmother. I’ve offered to come down, but they keep telling me no.”

He was pretty sure it had more to do with the fact they were thrilled he had a girlfriend and they didn’t want him to take time from Faith when they knew his job did it enough.

He’d been feeling like shit about that lately, but work called and she didn’t seem to mind.

He wasn’t sure how to take that and was glad he hadn’t said how he felt to her. Really felt.

In his mind, they were in a good spot and if he wanted more, he wasn’t risking it.

There could be so many reasons she didn’t mind he worked a lot.
