That had merit. She’d bring it up to Sawyer when she talked to him next.

She knew Sunday and yesterday he’d been busy with a murder investigation. She’d seen it on the news but heard a bit more from Sawyer. Nothing that couldn’t be released or was private. More like it was frustrating tracking people down and getting those people to talk.

She didn’t understand that. She’d help with anything she was asked to.

But not everyone was like her and she knew that.

Jennifer left her alone at that point and they went back to work for the day. She wasn’t one to stand around and gab much.

When she was home cooking hours later, her phone rang and she was hoping it was Sawyer but saw it was her mother.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hi, Faith. How are you doing?”

“Good. I’m just making some dinner for Fred and me.”

Her mother snorted. “You and that dog.”

“You love your first grandchild and you know it. You spoil him just as much as me when he’s there.”

“I do,” her mother said. “We love how protective he is of you. What are you making him?”

“I’m making salmon for dinner and Fred will get a little with his food.”

“At least you aren’t making it solely for your dog. Maybe someday you’ll be making food for a man.”

She ignored that statement and continued with her dinner, putting rice in the boiling water. “Anything going on?” she asked.

“Are you seeing someone?” her mother asked.

Son of a bitch. How was it possible it got back to her family this quickly? “What?” she asked. “Why would you say that? What is Aunt Jolene saying?”

“Wow,” her mother said. “Jolene isn’t saying anything. Second of all, whenever I bring up a comment about you having a man at some point you normally make some comment and blow it off like it was never said. And third, you didn’t answer me and now are getting defensive. What is going on?”

There wasn’t much she could do at this point short of lying and she didn’t want to do that. “You won’t say anything to Dad or Aunt Jolene?”

“I can’t tell your father?” her mother asked.

“You know Aunt Jolene can see right through him. He caves. He’s weak that way. Liam and I, we got our strength from you.”

Her mother laughed. “Now you are just trying to suck up to me.”

“It’s the truth and you know it.”

“Maybe a little. What is going on?”

“I’ve been on a few dates with a guy.”

“That’s wonderful. Does Fred like him?”

She found it funny her mother would ask that. “Fred loves him. We’ve got a little bit of a problem there.”

She told her mother what was going on. “That is interesting. Good but interesting. I do like your idea of having something of this man’s in your house. What’s his name?”

This should be the telling part. If her mother knew who it was. “Sawyer Brennan.”

There was some silence. “Don’t his grandparents live next door to Jolene and Gavin?”
