“That’s not true.”

“That’s what it looks like.”

“Give me a chance to prove it.” His hands reach for me, and my heart aches.

“I can’t.” My voice breaks as I shake my head, stepping away from him. Jimmy’s face falls.

“What do you mean you can’t?”

“I mean. I can’t. I have too much going on, and I need less stress in my life. Please leave.”

Jimmy stares at me in shock, shaking his head. I hold my ground, my arms wrapped around me. Blowing out a breath, he slowly nods, turning to the door. He looks back over his shoulder, opening his mouth, but seems to think better of it, closing it again as he steps out of the room, shutting the door firmly behind him.

My heart shatters as the door clicks shut. I sink to the floor, still clutching my towel, with hot tears tracking down my cheeks.

I thought I only wanted a hook-up with Jimmy. So why does it feel like I broke my heart telling him to go away?

Chapter 15

JIMMY

I shut the door behind me, feeling like my heart has been torn out and left inside the room. There is a muffled sob, and it takes everything I have not to go back in there and take Thelma in my arms. But she told me to leave. I have to respect that.

Running a hand through my hair, I slowly walk down the hallway, my feet faltering as I reach the living area, where Quinn is seated on the couch, his face impassive as he watches me.

“It looks like you won, cunt,” I snarl, glaring at him. Quinn’s eyebrows shoot up, looking amused.

“There was never a competition to begin with,” he replies. Smarmy fucker.

Striding out of the condo, I slam the door behind me, blowing out a breath. Fuck. Snatching my phone out of my pocket, I take the stairs down to the foyer, needing to burn off some steam.

Normally, I would hit the gym and work over a boxing bag, but I don’t want to be around people. Well, maybe one person can help talk me through this.

Trey is waiting beside the door to my condo when I get home. He follows me inside, knocking the door shut with his elbow and trailing me into the living room, dropping onto the couch across from me and waving his phone at me.

“What’s the emergency?”

Groaning, I scrub my face with both hands. “I fucked up.”

Trey leans forward, resting his forearms on his thighs as he watches me.

“How?”

“I fought that fucker Thelma has living with her.”

“And you got your ass handed to you or something?”

“No. He didn’t fight back.”

“So you fucked him up?”

“No. He held me off. But then Thelma was there, and she said she wasn’t some toy I only wanted because someone else picked her up and played with her.” I make a face at the comparison. She’s not a toy. This couldn’t be less of a game to me.

Trey shrugs, lounging back and propping up his feet on the coffee table. “I thought you didn’t want to date her.”

“I don’t.”

“Then how did you fuck up?”
