Alejandro took a firm hold of her wrist as he led her to the car. The Scot was already opening a back door.

“No! Wait! Roger and Snuggly!” She tugged away from Alejandro’s hold and raced over to grab them. Poor things were all dirty now. As she turned to the car, she was shocked to find Alejandro standing there.

His gaze was moving around their surroundings. She swallowed heavily. “Are we still in danger?”

“There is always danger.” His face was still closed off. And she hated it. She couldn’t get a read on him at all. Was he angry at her? Upset? What was he thinking?

Anxiety churned in her gut.

His eyes were onyx brown.

The Deity had been hard to read too. Although he’d hid his true feelings behind an amiable demeanor. A charismatic smile.

She shuddered.

Alejandro gestured for her to get into the car first. She shook her head. “You go first. You’re more important.”

He leaned in to whisper into her ear. “Get your butt in the car before I blister it.”

A shiver ran down her spine. Seemed that she was getting in the car first.

She climbed in and he got in behind her. As soon as the car door shut, she glanced over at him. Was he going to give her a clue of what was going on?

Instead of saying anything, he reached over and pulled the seat belt over her.

The Scot got in and Cairn glanced over at him. “Why are you bringing that?”

What? She peered around, groaning as she saw he was still holding the vibrator. Seriously?

Her cheeks flamed.

“I should’ve left it?” The Scot asked.

“Yes! Leave it,” she squeaked. “Oh God, please, leave it.”

“Scot,” Alejandro warned.

“I’ll throw it out when we stop. Don’t want to litter.”

They’d leave two unconscious bodies in an alley, but he didn’t want to litter. Sure, made sense.

Cairn pulled away from the curb as Alejandro hit a button to raise a screen that separated the front and back seats.

She snuck another wary glance at him. She was braced for his anger. Although she didn’t entirely know what he was mad about.

“Why are you looking at me like that? Is it because I threatened to spank you? I shouldn’t have made that threat. It was wrong.”

She gaped at him. This was . . . unexpected.

“Are you apologizing?” she asked.

“As much as I might want to spank you, I said I wouldn’t.”

“I’m not worried about you spanking me.”

He frowned, glancing over at her. “You trust I won’t go back on my word.”

She licked her dry lips. “No. I mean, yeah, I guess. But I’m not scared of being spanked. I don’t . . . I know you won’t harm me.”

“Do you?” he drawled. “So spankings aren’t off the table?”

There was a dark note of interest in his eyes that she didn’t fully trust.

“Uh, well, I, uh . . . would spanking me make you feel better?” she blurted out.

He gave her a shocked look. Finally, a crack in the armor. “What, no! Why would you think that?”

“Um. Well. I . . . you seemed mad.”

“Did I?”

He didn’t look mad now. He looked almost . . . tender. Concerned.

Why? Because she was close to losing it?

Because she was.

“What makes you think I was mad?”

“I don’t know. That’s just it. I don’t know what you were thinking. You weren’t giving anything away. You kept snapping out orders and seemed so cut off and cold I figured you were mad at me for something.”

“And you were willing to offer up your butt as a sacrifice to appease my anger?”

“Well, when you put it like that it sounds weird.”

“Pequeña, I wasn’t angry with you.”

“You weren’t? Well, of course you weren’t,” she added huffily. “No reason to be mad at me. I just saved someone from getting shot. You should be thanking me. You’re just so lucky I’m awesome at pitching.”

“Had a lot of practice throwing vibrators?”

“What? No!” She groaned. “I can’t believe I did that. So if you’re not upset at me, then what’s wrong?”

“Hmm, actually, I am a little upset with you.” He cut his gaze to her. “And I’ll likely take you up on your offer to spank you at a later date.”

“I didn’t offer.” Yikes. She kind of had, though, hadn’t she?

Awesome.

“Are you going to offer your butt for punishment every time I get upset with you?” he asked, sounding amused.

“Mierda! You are twisting what I say!”

“Am I? Because I’m wondering if maybe you want me to spank you.”

Urgh! He was so frustrating!

“No seas estúpido!”

His eyebrows rose. “Did you just call me a dumbass? Do you think that’s wise?”

No. Not wise at all.

She gulped.

“I really have to learn to think first.”

His face darkened. “Sí, Pequeña. You really do. Like just now, when you kept trying to get out from behind me to see what was happening even though you were expressly told to stay put.”
