“That it will have you sleeping with Syrn for a week?”

Ondine smiled. “Well, they are adorable.”

Geero was talking with Syrn, and Hera rescued her when she held out her arms.

Ondine handed the baby over, and Hera handed the baby to Misker.

Misker sighed. “Hera...”

“I will stop doing it when it stops being funny.” Heraina grinned and kissed him on the cheek. “I still do the feeding, so consider us even.”

He smiled, and they kissed with obvious affection.

Ondine chuckled and looked at Geero.

Hera asked, “So, why is Geero here?”

“Uh, he was Amadine’s escort then there was a fight, and he came with us here... for some reason.” She frowned as she realized that the logic didn’t continue to their arrival here. “Um. I just have to check something.” Ondine walked up to Geero and asked him, “Why are you still here?”

He chuckled. “I wondered when you would notice. I am here for a dinner and a party. It looks like Yalida and her brood throw a nice event.”

“Uh, what will you do after that?”

He looked down at her and smiled. “I am going to see if that Heks person plays something I can use to ask you to dance then I am going to.”

She stared. “Dancing?”

“Amadine is spinning around here like a top. I think you can manage a slow dance.”

She opened her mouth in surprise, and he leaned down for a kiss. Her toes curled in her boots as she went up on her toes and hung onto him. She wished she were wearing something pretty, but pretty things snagged in Titan.

Chapter Eight

Yalida looked at her friend and smiled. It was good that she found someone to enjoy herself with. If joy made her body heal, then Ondine should be good in no time. With Geero at close range, she was radiating happiness.

Yalida heard the rumble of a cycle and smiled. Heks was nearly with them, and the whine of a small scooter said Clavia wasn’t far behind.

“Dinner is ready, and the last folks are nearly here.” She called out, “Kids! Get the rest of the food on the table.”

The seven kids and Amadine swarmed the table with plates, cutlery, and an assortment of salads.

Heks pulled up with her passenger, who grinned and sprinted to join the other teens. Yalida smiled at Haver and waved. Haver nodded, and as the table was loaded with the meat and grilled vegetables, she helped levitate everything into place.

The guests took their seats, and after a thanks for coming over to enjoy the day, everyone dove in. Sauce levitated out from the kitchen, and Haver grinned as it settled.

The teens were chattering, and Yalida enjoyed the sound. Life as a refugee was rough, and it was worse if no one came for you. Heks asked, “So, Lida, when are you going to find a male to terrify?”

“Oh, I terrify them regularly. When they stop making them out of flesh and blood, I might keep one. It just gets messy.” She made the point with her potato salad on her fork. “Also, I don’t think many males can put up with this many teens in one place.”

The teens grinned. Riisel smiled. “If you find a partner, we will be on our best behaviour. Well, you or Clavia. We only have to stay with you for two more years, so we can behave that long.”

Sara nodded. “If we can keep ourselves polite when CPS and immigration come by, we can manage it in front of a date.”

Lida was about to speak when she heard a vehicle coming. She lifted her head and got to her feet. “Please, excuse me.”

The dark sedan pulled up, and the social worker assigned to the children emerged. “Mr. Thorn. To what do we owe the honour of your company?”

He loomed over her and looked at the assembled picnic tables. “I am just doing a random check. You know, like the ones you were warned of.”
