I remember him.I’ll get the names to you ASAP. Thanks Cole. I owe you!

Me:

Family perks. Just make sure everyone spends plenty of money hahaha

Elliot:

Poor students, remember? *laughing emoji*

Me:

OK you can owe me

Elliot sent back a GIF of a man shaking his head in disappointment, and I smiled as I returned to typing my email. My phone lit up again, and I glanced down at the screen, expecting it to be my cousin, but it wasn’t.

Hux:

How’s your day going? This is mine

Huxley had attached a picture of a huge stack of books on a table, with a takeaway coffee cup next to them. In the corner of the picture, I could see part of his laptop and rows of shelves behind it. I was guessing he was in the uni library.

Me:

Mine

Fuck, I missed him. Seeing his name appear on my phone made my heart beat faster, and I wanted to prolong this moment between us for as long as possible. I was Huxley-starved, if that was a thing.

Arranging the windows on my computer screen to show both my email client and my music player, I snapped a picture and sent it to him. Grinning to myself, I waited for his inevitable reply. I’d set my Spotify to play its auto-generated playlist of my most-listened-to songs, and I knew he’d have something to say about the tracks listed on it.

Sure enough…

Hux:

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT ABOMINATION? You have Oasis next to Cher, and the Stereophonics next to Kylie?!!!

Me:

Look at it this way. Before you I wouldn’t have had either of those bands on there at all. I think the only band we both liked was The Hunna. This is all thanks to your influence

Hux:

I need to influence you more

Me:

Or maybe you should let me influence you. What about this?

I sent him a YouTube link to a rock cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” Five minutes later, my phone rang.

“What the fuck was that, Cole?”

Fuck, I loved the sound of his voice. “There’s plenty more where that came from. Maybe you could incorporate some covers into your set list. Or do a one-off gig—‘the 2Bit Princes cover the queens of pop.’”

“I hate you.”

“You don’t.”

“No, I don’t.” He sighed. “It might be easier if I did, though.”
