“You wouldn’t leave me alone; apparently, I’ve got loads of mates.”

He snorted at my sarcasm.

“I’m sure that was a surprise.”

“Understatement,” I muttered, tossing a pebble into the water and watching the ripples. “Look, everyone says I should give you a real chance. But I’m warning you, a relationship with me won’t be like most.”

“What if that’s not a problem for us?” His question had me glancing over to find Isaac staring at me, watching my responses.

“Then I guess we see how things go.”

More footsteps joined and I looked up to see the rest of the pack approaching.

“Holding out on fishing spots?” Colt teased as he sat down on my other side. Oaks gave me a wink before sinking down next to us, Vince and Sawyer taking a seat next to their alpha.

“Well, the whole gang is here,” I joked, trying to swallow down the urge to run.

“When are you letting us take you out to sea, sunshine?” Vince asked. “We’ll treat you like a queen.”

“Isn’t that yacht for work, not pleasure?” I countered.

“Eh, we’ve got an in with the boss,” Sawyer pointed out.

“The boss isn’t really happy with us so what’s it going to hurt?” Colt teased.

Isaac’s sigh had me turning back to him.

“There’s a story there.” He nodded in agreement.

“When I said this was supposed to be temporary, I meant it. My dad expected me to learn the ins and outs, know what I was doing, then join the business side of things. The issue was that once I got out to sea, I had no desire to go sit in an office and listen to him be a dick.”

“He’s one of those types? Ouch,” I said. “I can’t imagine dealing with an asshole like that who you can’t easily avoid. Have you considered branching out on your own?”

“Things aren’t quite that dire yet. I’ve got a trust from my grandfather who started the business, which Dad hates, but I’m not business savvy. Running the bookings side of things would be torture,” Isaac admitted.

“Did you guys all meet before working together?”

“We grew up together,” Oaks answered. “Somehow we managed to not piss each other off too badly over the years.”

My phone went off and I picked it up to find the rest of my pack messaging. Amos separately and the others in the group chat.

Amos: Can we talk?

Serenity: You clearly have some things to work out before we do. If you feel that strongly about Evrin and the lies he told you, we have no reason to.

Amos: I would never hurt you. It was just..

Serenity: Intimidation?

Amos: No, frustration, and it was misplaced. I’ve had to watch him spiral for years and took what he said about you to heart. Maybe I do have a lot to think over.

Serenity: We’ll talk later, then.

“What’s wrong?” Isaac had already picked up on my mood switch.

“Things with the other pack are going to be complicated as fuck,” I said. “You guys deserve to know to what degree so I guess I don’t get to hold back.”

“Whatever you’re ready to share, we’ll listen to,” Sawyer promised. He gave me a reassuring smile.
