“In college I met a guy,” I started. “He was a chosen mate, but one I’d moved in with by sophomore year. We were young and things moved quickly.”

“Until they fell apart?” Oaks guessed.

“Yup. He had a best friend who hated me. She never thought I was the right fit for him,” I explained.

“Let me guess, she sabotaged you guys?” Colt said. “God, I hate petty women.”

“She did. Set up some fake videos and sent them to Evrin. He took one look, assumed it was me, and threw all my shit out into the hall. What wasn’t stolen by the time I got there I had to try and keep safe while also trying to find a place to crash. There were some terrifying moments, not all alphas are safe.”

“What a fucking asshole,” Vince growled. “He didn’t care if you got hurt?”

“Nope, in fact he wouldn't even let me tell my side,” I said. “He came out to call me some awful things and that was the last we spoke. He and Malia turned everyone against me until I dropped out and came back home to Lockwood.”

“So, how does this group tie into the story?” Oaks asked, guessing that this wasn't the end.

“Amos and Silas are his brothers. Jackson is their friend,” I admitted.

“Ouch, ‘complicated’ is an understatement,” Vince winced. “Do they know?”

“They were hired by him to find me, they’re private investigators,” I said with a humorless laugh. “Jackson and Silas heard me out but I had to kick Amos out because he let his anger get the best of him.”

“Did he hurt you?” Isaac’s voice was hard and he let out a low growl.

“No,” I reassured him. “He tried to intimidate me and I told him to leave.”

“Good girl,” he answered, flexing his fingers as if he clenched his fists a bit too hard.

“He’s asking me to chat now,” I admitted. “But I told him to figure his own shit out first.”

“What did the others say?”

“They made him leave,” I explained as I checked the group chat.

Silas: We’re heading out for a few days but we’ll be back in town. I’d like to get to know you more. Date when we get back?

Jackson: Group date and single dates?

Serenity: Sure. Let me know when you get back.

“They’re heading out for a couple days,” I explained.

“To go see the ex. You said he hired them, right?” Colt asked. I nodded and he laughed. “Bet that’s going to go amazingly well for them.”

“Evrin has apparently been spiraling. I guess I was supposed to feel bad for him but like I told them, he lost all rights to my concern for him when he threw me out and nearly got me killed,” I said. “Kat just told me they never even ended up together.”

“The girl best friend never does. If she were a mate she’d be a mate, not a friend,” Oaks said.

“Well, it sounds like we have a few days of having you to ourselves,” Colt pointed out.

“I have a job,” I reminded them. “But maybe we should get together and not when I’m brooding by the lake.”

“This lake is worth brooding over,” Isaac said as he stared out at the water. “We brought poles, you want to fish for a bit?”

“Go for it, I’m not in the mood but I’m not ready to leave.”

Oaks and Vince ran to their car and came back with more poles and a tackle box. I opened the cooler and took out a cold soda and a sandwich, telling the guys to dig in. Mom had packed more than enough.

“I think we already have our first date,” Colt joked as he took a sandwich.
