I looked down at my phone. A smiling picture of Lily wearing bunny ears was my screen saver. “Yeah, I talked to my dad. She’s having a blast. Hasn’t even asked about me.”

Jerry laughed. “I’m looking forward to being a parent. I can’t wait to have kids.”

It was such a simple thing to say, a lot of people felt the way Jerry did, but it really surprised me. Sure, Jerry had a few years on Kyle, but we weren’t kids. Kyle didn’t want a girlfriend, let alone kids and here Jerry was saying he couldn’t wait to be a dad.

Stupid Kyle.

It was so obvious he invited that woman over just to have sex with her. Or maybe just to make me jealous. I guessed it could’ve been both. And his plan worked. I was jealous.

There I was, on a date with a handsome man who wanted to get to know me, and I was stuck thinking about Kyle and what he was doing with that beautiful woman in his office.

“Oh yeah?” I said, realizing I’d been silent for too long. “There are definitely a lot of amazing things about having a kid.”

I was distracted, talking to Jerry in vague phrases that weren’t conversations starters. It was lame, maybe just an excuse really, but I was overwhelmed. Being out with a guy, everything happening with Kyle, it was too much for me.

There was an awkward silence until I thought of something to say. “Do you have any plans for the long weekend?”

As soon as the words left my mouth, I inwardly cringed. I didn’t want him to think I was trying to see him again, but on top of that, it was another super lame thing to say. I seemed to have lost all my cool, completely consumed with thoughts of Kyle.

He’s with someone else right now.

Just as Kyle opened his mouth to answer, my phone vibrated on the table. Worried it was Mom or Dad calling about Lily, I picked it up.

It wasn’t.

It was a text from Kyle.

“Sorry,” I told Jerry. “I thought it might be my parents about Lily, but it’s Kyle.”

“No need to apologize,” Jerry said, munching on a peanut.

I opened the text.

Kyle: I need you back here. Now. Problem with the Marr St. property.

I sighed.

“There’s a work problem,” I explained, reaching my drink. But, I didn’t know what to think, Kyle had never texted me after work before, let alone when we were both on dates.

Unless…

Would Kyle really fake a work emergency to kill my date?

Kyle: I have on read receipts. I know you saw that.

Shit.

I needed to text him back, almost relieved to have a reason to ditch Jerry but to also try and figure out if he had sex with that woman.

Emma: I’m coming.

Kyle: Not yet.

The reply came almost instantly. I had to read it again to make sure I hadn’t made it up.

“Something wrong?” Jerry asked, his eyebrow raised.

“Yeah.” I shook my head. “I mean, no. Kyle’s just saying he needs me back at the office for something.”
