“Oh,” Jerry said, but didn’t sound particularly surprised. “Right now?” He popped another peanut into his mouth.

I squinted at my phone screen like it would change the words. Maybe I was just confused, maybe I was just dying to know if Kyle hooked up with that girl, maybe I knew Kyle wanted to make sure nothing happened between Jerry and me. Part of me was even glad my date was over.

"Yeah, I’m afraid so,” I said, injecting as much disappointment into my voice as possible.

“Well, I know how important this job is to you, and sometimes, only sometimes, work has to come first.”

I grasped Jerry’s forearm with one hand and picked up my drink with the other. I knew better than to waste a perfectly good drink. “Thank you for being so understanding.”

“Raincheck?” he asked, lifting his glass to mine. “Cheers.”

I laughed. “Cheers.” I then downed my drink. I had a feeling I was going to need it to calm my nerves. I purposefully didn’t respond to the raincheck part.

As I walked out, I couldn’t help but to check my hair and lipstick in the mirror hanging near the door. No matter what was waiting me in the office, I wanted to look good for it.

What felt like only seconds later, I found myself stepping off the elevator and taking a deep breath. The office was mostly quiet, but not totally empty, though the top floor seemed to be pretty deserted. Kyle’s office door was open and as I reached my desk, he spotted me.

I wanted him to smile, to tell me to get to work, to do something to let me know how he felt. Instead, all I got was an unreadable gaze, his eyes steel, his jaw tight.

“Hi,” I said, stepping into his office. “What’s the problem with the property?”

Kyle came out from behind his desk to stand almost too closely to me in the middle of his office. “Don’t do that. Don’t act like you don’t know why I called you here.”

Suddenly the collar of my silky blouse was too tight and there was so air in the room.

“Just tell me why, Kyle.”

He ran his hand through his dark hair, and from tousled it looked, I guessed he’d been doing that a lot. “Because I didn’t want you with Jerry.”

I swayed on my feet. Kyle smelled so good, like soap and sandalwood.

“Well, I’m here.”

Kyle closed the tiny gap between us, his hands on my hips, our chests almost touching.

“That means you wanted this too,” he said, his breath dancing across my cheek.

“That depends. Where did that woman you invited up here go?” I took a step away from him, coming into the office more. Kyle shut the door and then I turned my back to him to take in the view of the city below. All the lights were coming to life.

“She left,” he answered simply.

“So, you already fucked her? Because I’ve gotta tell you, Kyle. I’m kind of tired of being your second choice.” I didn’t realize how true my words were until I said them. It was as if I was just not letting myself feel upset about him being with someone else.

“No. I haven’t had sex with anyone since you because I don’t want to be with anyone but you.”

I gasped at his words. Or maybe it was because Kyle came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my stomach, his erection pressing into my ass.

“Kyle, tell me why you called me here. The truth.”

Kyle didn’t answer with words, just his body. He moved one hand up to cup my breast while the other pushed my skirt up until it was like a belt around my waist.

“Because I want to fuck you,” he said between planting kisses on my neck.

“But…but you want more than that. I know you—”

My words were lost. Kyle dipped his hands inside my panties cupping me. I leaned back into him.

“Just tell me you want me, Emma.”
