“Let me get my purse.” She continued talking as she headed to the kitchen to get her purse. “I only need to go to one store. And I only need five outfits since I won’t be working for you for long. I’ll mix and match the outfits to avoid buying more.”

Caleb didn’t reply, so she assumed he was okay with her plan. Wrong. He dragged her to five different stores, forcing her to try on countless outfits. Nothing she chose was up to par, according to him. Her choices were either too tight, too bright, too dark, too this, or too that. By the fifth store, Tiera was fed up.

“I quit,” she told him.

“Let’s try one more store,” he drawled.

She rolled her eyes at two women who ogled Caleb as they walked past. They acted as if they hadn’t seen her standing there. No, she wasn’t his girlfriend. They didn’t know that. Rude.

“I said I quit,” she told him. “Not just this dreadful shopping spree, but the job also. Don’t worry about taking me home. I’ll call a cab.”

He grabbed her arm when she turned to walk away.

“You can’t quit.”

“I can. I did. Let go.”

“You can’t quit, Tiera. Because we need you.”

She ceased pulling away. “Who is we?”

“Me, your brother, and the company.”

Her gaze rose to his. He looked serious. Perhaps this situation was more serious than she’d thought.

“Caleb, what’s going on?”

“Let me take you shopping, then have dinner with me, and I’ll tell you all about it.”

She started to protest.

“You can pick out your own outfits.”

“And you’ll still buy them?”

“Of course.”

“Okay.”

“But, Tiera, you can’t keep threatening to quit.”

“Whatever.”

“I’m serious.”

“Okay. Let’s go to this last store. Then we’ll get lunch, and you can tell me how royally you’ve fucked up things.”

He chuckled. “Your vocabulary has gotten brighter.”

“I’ve been practicing,” she replied as she strode toward the store.

He followed. She didn’t miss the way he kept staring around them. He’d done that at their family dinner last night too. He’d also done that at her mother’s house this morning. Apparently, having the press snap his photo at the worst possible times had traumatized him. Part of her felt sorry for him.

The other part of her told the sorry part to simmer down. This time, he kept silent as she shopped. Thankfully, the last store had a nice plus-size section. She was able to find outfits that fit well and looked good. She ignored the frowns and glares from Caleb. She tried on each of the outfits and selected the five she wanted.

“You can buy the other outfits you liked,” he told her before they left the store.

“These will be enough. I don’t want to owe you too much.”
