“Go to sleep, Andie.I’ll be back soon.”

He left me alone in the room.Assuming he was just cleaning up, I got ready for bed and slipped under the covers without him.

The harsh pounding on our front door pulled me from what felt like a very truncated night’s sleep.I threw back the covers and hurried to the hallway, meeting up with Brandon and Sid.

Sid reached the door first, so Brandon and I hung back.

Waurlyn stood in the opening, looking perfectly put together even though it was still pitch-black outside.I looked at the clock. It was just past eleven.I hadn’t even slept for more than thirty minutes.

Holding back my frown, I looked at her again.

“Did he tell any of you where he was going?”she asked, entering the house.

Behind her, I saw a flurry of activity.Guards jumping out of vehicles.A drone in the air, buzzing around.

“Who?”Brandon asked before looking at me.“Molev?”

I shrugged slightly.“When we all turned in, he said he would be back soon.I’m assuming he went for a run. He’s been cooped up for a while. It would make sense.”

Waurlyn studied me for a long moment.

“I’m walking a very fine line here, Andie. We all answer to someone, and the sooner Molev understands that, the safer he will be.He needs to tell me when he plans to leave.”

“You think you’re protecting him from higher up the food chain?”I shook my head.“I pity anyone who tries to use him like their personal asset. We’re not keeping him safe; he’s keeping us safe.”

“The mountains and our men are doing that.”

“For now, but not forever.Every person we lose is another undead.”

“Exactly.Their numbers are growing, and our time is limited. We need him here.”

“And he will be as long as we all remember he’s his own person exercising the same free will you and I enjoy on a daily basis. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going back to bed.”

“We need to work together, Andie,” she said as I walked away.

“We are,” I said.“Stop trying to control him, and he’ll stick around.Smother him, and he’ll run just like any other man in existence.”

She didn’t try to follow me or say anything else, so I crawled back into bed and closed my eyes for much longer because, the next time I surfaced, it was light outside, and Molev’s arm was across my waist.

“You kicked the hornet’s nest last night,” I said, closing my eyes again.

“Explain.”

“You upset Waurlyn by leaving without letting her know first. She thought you’d left for good.”

His arm tightened around me, pulling me closer to his chest.

“Never,” he said softly.

“I know that, but she doesn’t.Where did you go?”

“Outside the perimeter.I wanted to test her trust.”

I twisted to look back at him.“And?”

“She removed the guards and cameras from the house, but both are still there.Only more distant. The guards in the house across the street used their radios as soon as I left.A drone tried to follow me.When it couldn’t, she came to speak to you.”

He lifted his arms from around my waist and smoothed his hand over my arm.
