“I apologize for not telling you, Andie, but I needed to know what she would do to you if I left.”

“You needed to know if she was like the general,” I said.“I understand. Was the test only for her, though?”

His lips twitched.

“That’s what I thought. You better make me a really good breakfast, and not as an apology for testing me but for waking me up after I just fell asleep. You do that again, and I won’t be responsible for my actions.”

He chuckled. The sexy sound shot straight through me.

“Tell me your favorite breakfast, and I will make it for you.”

“Lemon ricotta stuffed french toast with a blueberry glaze. And I’m not telling you how to make it.You get to run around bugging people like people bugged me last night.Good luck.”

Internally grinning, I turned away from him and closed my eyes again.

“Tread carefully, Andie,” he said close to my ear.“I love a challenge and always win.”

CHAPTERTWENTY

The soft murmurof voices drifting into my bedroom slowly woke me again.Stretching, I inhaled the scent of French toast and looked at my watch. It was just past ten.I hadn’t managed almost twelve hours of sleep in forever. The last time had probably been due to a hangover.

Inhaling deeply, I got out of bed, too curious about what Molev had managed to find.

I found him in the kitchen with Katie, who was explaining the different ways to make stuffed French toast.

“Just spread it between two pieces of bread,” Steve said.“That sounds like the fastest way to get it in my belly.”

Katie grinned and shook her head.“You’re like a vulture. If you’re hungry, make your own breakfast. There’s plenty in there.”

“But that looks and sounds better than anything I can make,” Steve said, leaning against the counter.

“Smells better than anything you’ve made, too,” I said.

Molev’s attention shifted from whatever he was stirring on the stove. His gaze raked up my bare legs before settling on my face.Ignoring the heat in that sweeping glance, I went to him and peeked at what was in the pot.

“Where did you find the blueberries?”

“I asked for them.”

“And the ricotta?”I asked, looking at the bowl.

“Yes,” he said.

“Who did you ask?”

Katie started to laugh.“Our neighbors. You should have seen it.When he asked me to go with him to ask for the ingredients, I wasn’t sure what was going on.Especially when we walked across the street and he knocked on the door.I was still trying to figure out how to tell him the house was empty when he grabbed the doorknob and gave it a push.It didn’t even look like a hard push.

“The lock busted right out of the frame. He walked right in and was all, ‘Hello, tell Waurlyn that I need blueberries and ricotta cheese.’The living room was empty. There wasn’t a person in sight. And I was like, ‘Who are you talking to, Molev?’He said, ‘The men in the other room.’A second later, a guy walked out, looked at the door, looked at Molev, looked at me, and just nodded and said he would let Waurlyn know right away.

“Thirty minutes later, we had our ingredients.”

“I can’t imagine that went over well,” I commented.

“Nah, it was fine.Molev stayed at their place and showed them how to better block the door and fixed the busted lock.”

“So no one yelled at you?”I asked.

“Not for that part,” Katie said, still speaking on Molev’s behalf.“Waurlyn delivered the ingredients herself and asked where Molev went last night. He told her he went for a run, and she asked him to stay inside the perimeter from now on.He said it was too small for a good run then picked her up and took off with her.She was pretty quiet when he brought her back.”
