I glanced at Molev.“What did you do?”

“I took her to the same spot I took you and told her that I was not interested in her smothering attention but that I had several brothers who would be.She asked me to return her to the base, and I did. Before she left, I told her that the food I requested was to make amends for her behavior last night.I asked her never to wake the people in my house again unless it was an emergency.”

I stared at him, processing what he’d done. He’d acknowledged the presence of his hidden guards in a non-confrontational way, had proven this base couldn’t contain him while also giving Waurlyn a taste of why it couldn’t, and had shown his protectiveness over us without any serious flexing.

“You’re a smart man, Molev,” I said.

“If he was smart, he would have talked Katie into making breakfast instead of doing it himself.”

I tore my gaze from Molev’s so he wouldn’t see how much it meant to me that he hadn’t.

“Careful, Steve,” I said.“He might drop yours on the floor.”

Brandon snorted from his place on the couch.“Like that would stop any of us from eating it.This is gourmet-level food.Who knows the next time we’ll eat something like this? What are a few stray chest hairs stuck to it going to matter?”

“Why is nothing sacred to you?”Steve said, turning to give Brandon a disgusted look.

Keeping my amusement to myself, I headed back to the bedroom to shower and change.By the time I reemerged, Steve and Katie were eating, and Brandon and Roni were nearby, salivating.

“This is so good,” Katie said around a mouthful.“Seriously, Molev. When all of this is done, I’m planting some blueberry bushes and finding a cow so you can keep making this.”

“What about the lemons?”Roni asked.

“There’s got to be orchards still standing somewhere, right?”she said.

Molev handed over another two plates and added two more dipped sandwiches into the pan.

“So what are the plans for today, other than brunch?”I asked.

“More games,” Molev said.“Katie can see if the guards next door want to play once she’s done.”

I couldn’t decide if he was trying to cause trouble or prevent it with that kind of move.

“What about inviting Waurlyn too?”I asked just to see.

He blinked at me and slowly grinned.

“That is a good idea.”

I wasn’t completely convinced it was until we had a houseful of people a few hours later. We split into two large teams for charades, which started a little stilted but quickly became a laugh fest.Molev openly acknowledged his inability to read during his turn, so I helped him.Waurlyn watched everything closely but joined in and even laughed.

Molev cooked up what we had for burgers and brats for dinner, and we continued until Waurlyn said she had to go.The guards from next door were quick to leave then too.

Knowing that the evening was wrapping up and preferring not to face alone time with Molev, I tried to sneak away and get ready for bed without him.

“Let’s go for a run,” Roni said before I could escape. She waved her hand at Sid when he groaned.“Not you.Girls-only run.You in Katie?”

“I think I’d rather take kitchen cleanup,” she said.

“Suit yourself.Come on, Andie.”

The hard stare she gave me was enough to know that Roni had something on her mind that she didn’t want to say in front of the others.Considering how outspoken she was, I nodded and said goodbye to my chance of escaping another quiet conversation with Molev. It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy them.I did.Too much.Which was why avoiding seemed the best way to keep the distance we needed because, based on the long looks he’d been giving me all day, cozying up with me again was definitely on his mind.

“Why are you being such a baby?”Roni asked as we started an easy jog.

“About what?”I asked.

“Rocking his world. He’s obviously interested, and you’re interested, no matter how much you’re trying to hide it.”
