“Like your opinion of him, his goals haven’t changed. He wants to stop the spread of this plague as badly as we do and is very determined to find a way to live with us peaceably. Now, if that’s all, I’d like to help unload and set up.”

Patrick waved me away, and I went to help Roni locate a few tents and some rations.Rather than setting everything up on the ground level, we hauled what we could to the roof.If we had to be outside, higher was always better than on the ground. After we set up, we sat to eat a quick meal.

Below us, personnel backed the trucks to a pair of trailers already docked at the bay doors. The hum of motors running outside the building, in addition to those inside the building, wasn’t enough to draw more infected, proving that the ones close by were already dead.

If we didn’t shoot, we wouldn’t draw any more.

Until the sun set.

Still eating, I moved to the edge of the building to watch where we were erecting the lights that would draw in the infected. It was better that they were on the ground from a visibility standpoint. If they were higher, they would be seen from a greater distance. However, they were more vulnerable on the ground too.Patrick seemed to have the same thought because he ordered several of the lights hauled to the roof as a precaution. Those were arranged around the tents.

Before they finished, Molev appeared with wet hair and wearing a different shirt.

I watched from above as he jogged over to Patrick, noting the new bites on his arms and face.I didn’t like it.Each sign of his vulnerability made me want to close myself off like I’d done so easily in the past. But after the snarl, I knew any sign of retreat wouldn’t go well. And now wasn’t the time or place to further test Molev’s patience with me.

So I embraced the worry and the situation as best as I could.

“Patrick was moody about you leaving,” I said softly as he spoke to Patrick.“He thought you abandoned us.You should tell him you went to clean up and put on a tighter shirt so I’d be tempted to make out with you more.”

Molev stopped talking and looked up at me.

“What? It looks good on you, and I’m a sucker for well-defined pecs.”

“Are you dirty-talking him from here?”Roni asked from behind me.

I hadn’t even heard her sneak up on me and startled a little on the inside. On the outside, I played it cool and didn’t turn to look at her when I answered.

“No, I’m stating the facts.I like his muscles, and he went to clean up.”

Molev crossed his arms as he continued to look at me.Patrick turned to look too.

Roni snorted.“You’re going to get him into more trouble.”

“No, I won’t.Not if he admits to Patrick that I’m sassing him and that he can hear it from there. Those little nuggets of information will go a long way to reassuring Patrick that Molev’s not trying to hide anything.”

Molev glanced at Patrick again and said something.Patrick shook his head, and they both looked at me.

I shrugged at them.

“What are you going to do if Molev comes up here all hot and bothered?”Roni asked.

“Feed him.If he’s nice, it will be a meal without the red sauce.”

“Cruel,” Roni said with a laugh.

Molev spoke again and came jogging over. However, instead of using the ladder, he picked up speed and scaled the side of the building in a jump and a half.

“Shit,” Roni breathed next to me as he landed in front of us.

“Hungry?”I asked him.

His heated gaze swept over my face in response.

“Good,” I said as if he’d answered.“Let’s go find something to eat.”

I turned to go back to the tent, but his arm hooked around my waist and anchored my back to his chest. His lips brushed the side of my head, and his exhale teased the shell of my ear.

“I did not like today,” he said.“I learned that I did have a role in my heart for you.One you will not like.”
