“One of those greys showed up after Cody and Roland had almost reached the end of the railcar line,” Roni said.

“It was the same one that had taken our trucks and told me about the baby,” I said.

All four looked at me.

“Are you sure?”Patrick asked.

I glanced at Roni, looking for her to back me up, and she shrugged.

“They all looked the same to me.”

“Seriously? He was bigger and had much longer hair than the other five with him.And he had braids with three orangish beads on one side and two orange and a brown one in the middle.A line of over a dozen stitches up his forearm.Scars on his neck right over his Adam’s apple.”

Cody smirked at me.

“You were really paying attention.”

“She always pays attention,” Patrick said.“What else did you see, Andie?”

“He’s different.Closed off.We have body language and facial cues that give away what we’re feeling. He either doesn’t or is working not to show them. The first option just makes him harder to read and the second makes him… suspicious.”

I’d almost gone with terrifying but didn’t want to acknowledge how uncomfortable he made me feel.

Cody chuckled.“You’re not going to let me forget that, are you?”

Early on, Cody had a problem with me due to my lack of reaction to almost anything. He understood me better now. They all did.I’d already come to terms with my inevitable death. Why waste the precious time I had left with useless emotions? It didn’t mean I didn’t feel; I simply chose not to react to how I felt.

Ignoring Cody, I continued talking to Patrick.

“His eye contact is the most telling,” I said.“It’s direct, and I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s like he’s waiting for something. And he’s one hundred percent focused on whatever it is he’s waiting for.Intensely focused.”

“Do you believe he’s an immediate danger to this base?”

“I might be good at reading people, Patrick, but he’s something completely different.I can’t—”

“You can. When you look at him, do you feel threatened?”

“Yes, but not. We’ve seen what the greys can do and know he’s a danger. The immediacy of it is up to him.It feels like he’s waiting for something.Watching to see what we’ll do.”

Patrick looked at Roni.

“What about you?”

She shook her head slightly.

“Andie lowered her weapon, and I followed her lead.As soon as it was down, he started talking. He’s absolutely watching us.I can’t decide if he’s waiting to be reactive or waiting for the perfect moment.”

Patrick glanced at the other two.

“I’m willing to risk myself and everyone else who signed up for this,” Roland said.“But not the people here.If there’s even a chance he’s a threat, I say we immediately deal with it.”

“I’d rather strike first and ask questions later,” Cody said.“Less dead people on our side that way.”

Patrick was quiet for a long moment.

“Gather the team, and meet at housing in ten.”

We all split, going our separate ways.I headed for the mess and found Steve, William, and Kevin there.
