“Is she like you?”I asked, my gaze sweeping over his pointed ears.
“She is a human female.”
“The one looking for her baby?”
“No.”
He wasn’t really giving me much in the way of information.
I opened my mouth to try another question when I heard a thwomp-thwomp from behind him.
His gaze held mine as his knees buckled.I could have sworn I saw the corners of his mouth curve again as they hit the ground.Stunned, I watched him topple face-first into the snow-dusted packed gravel.
Behind the grey, Roland stood with the riot shotgun.He kept it aimed at Molev.
“I didn’t think it would work until I saw how much he was bleeding,” he said.
I looked down at Molev, noting the two bean bags Roland had fired at close range and the weeping hole in Molev’s back.Evan’s shot.
Holy shit.
Moving quickly, I hurried to Evan while Roland covered Molev.
“Evan’s breathing, but not responding,” I said.“Head’s bleeding.”
I tugged his walkie free and used it.
“We have the grey to the west of the main entrance near the big earth movers.Evan’s down and needs medical.The grey is down and needs medical too.”
“Copy,” Patrick returned.
Steve and Cody showed up first and helped carefully move Evan back to the MRAP.I stayed with Roland until more men showed up to help move the grey.
Six of them grunted under his weight, and one swore under his breath.
“What in the hell does he eat?Rocks?”
Roland smirked.“Think that’s why he was in a quarry?”
A few of them chuckled as they carried him toward the other MRAP.
“Take Evan to the base,” Patrick said to Tom and Cody.
“What about that one?”Tom asked.
We looked at the grey resting haphazardly on his stomach in my MRAP.His wound no longer bled, but that didn’t mean he was fine.I’d been around guns enough to know that no exit wound meant the bullet was still inside.
“It’s safer to keep him on this side of the fence until we know what we’re dealing with.Any sign of more?”Patrick asked, looking at me.
“No.Just him so far.”
He nodded and looked at the team.
“Finish sweeping the area while we wait for Tom and Cody.Andie, Roni, and Roland, stay with me.”
Everyone hustled to their assigned duties.
