“Yes, and some of them are still alive.”

His gaze shifted to my hands, which were resting on my thighs.

“No husband?”

“Nope.Never connected with anyone I would want to spend the rest of my life with.”

“Any children?”

I wasn’t sure how I felt about his focused questions. Was he trying to profile me in some way, or was he trying to build a rapport like I was?

“No.No kids. What about you?Do you have a wife and kids waiting for you back home?”

“No.”

“What do you miss from back home?”Roland asked.

Molev held my gaze briefly before turning to look at Roland.

“Both our worlds changed with the earthquake. While there is much I miss, this world offers more than ours ever could.”

“Is that why you’re here?We have resources you need?”I asked.

Molev’s gaze pinned me.“Yes.”

CHAPTERFIVE

By the time we stopped,my ass was completely numb from sitting on the cold, vibrating floor of the MRAP.I could have taken Kevin’s seat since, after answering the resource question, Molev had closed his eyes and reclined his head. But even though I’d respected the universal “Shut up; I’m tired” sign, I hadn’t believed for a moment that he slept.Which was why I hadn’t moved from my spot on the floor.

Now, as the engine died, I studied him.

Molev opened his eyes and lifted his head from the folded seat behind him.His immediate alertness confirmed what I’d suspected. He hadn’t been sleeping at all.

Once again, his penetrating gaze unerringly found me.

“How are you feeling?”I asked.“Would you like another drink?”

“Please.”

I stood to retrieve a water bottle.

Neither Kevin nor Roland made any move to exit the vehicle. It had been radio silence since Kevin broadcasted the start of my conversation with Molev, and I wondered what Patrick’s next move would be.

Cracking open the seal on the bottle, I edged closer to Molev. He leaned forward willingly enough, and I helped him drink while he studied me.

While he’d pretended to sleep, I’d openly stared at his ears and grey skin.He looked so alien when his eyes were open with their vertical pupils narrowed on me.But with them closed? He’d seemed almost human.Very different, of course, but still human.

As soon as he drained the bottle, I retreated and sat on the floor again.

“What resources are you interested in?”I asked, picking up our conversation where we’d left off.

I was no spokesperson for the entire human race, but since he seemed willing enough to speak to me, I’d try to find anything useful that might help those in a position to bargain.

Molev considered me for a moment.

“The same as any survivor,” he said.“The resources that will help create a peaceful, safe community where those I love can live purposeful lives.”

He glanced at the back of the MRAP a second before the door opened.
