CHAPTERTWELVE

“We’ve done this before, Molev,”Patrick said.“We aren’t gearing up to kill them; we’re guarding the lights. With the base personnel here, we can hold the base until dawn. We’ll move out then.”

Patrick nodded to Cody and Tamra and took off at a jog.The other two followed.I looked at Molev, knowing Patrick meant for me to stay with him.

Molev’s gaze, which had been following Cody and Tamra, locked onto me.

“This is not a pair of hounds but a pack. They will circle the base and make much noise. This close to the city, many infected will come.If the infected were able to use their numbers to breach Vance’s fence, why does Patrick think this one will hold?”

“Because it has to hold.Come on.I saw some pretty high roofs out there.Good vantage points if you can get up there without ripping any stitches.”

He followed when I started walking.

I tried not to think about what he’d said.If I thought about all the things that could go wrong, I’d be letting fear in.And fear broke focus, something I couldn’t afford at the moment.I had to find a way to keep Molev from doing his roar thing and going after the hounds like my gut was telling me he would do if shit started going south.

When we’d almost reached the exterior exit, Molev side-stepped around me to open the door, filling the space with his bulk and blocking my view of the yard.He stayed there for two beats, then moved forward.Everything was quiet outside. No howls.

I stuck with him.

My hope was that he’d stay on the roof as a lookout. If everything went well, the lights would keep the hounds out, and our guns would keep the infected from piling up.

Molev turned suddenly, knocking my legs out from under me and catching me in one fluid motion. My gaze didn’t go to his but swept the area around us, looking for whatever threat he’d seen that I hadn’t.Before I could spot anything, he jumped. Not once but several times from one roof to the next, working his way to the highest building.

He stopped on the roof but didn’t put me down.I finally looked up at him and caught his gaze.

“What was it?”I whispered.

“We stick together.”

“Oh.Okay.”

He set me down but kept an arm around my waist as he looked toward the south.

“Can you hear them?”I asked.

“No.They are silent now.”

“Do you think they’ve passed us?”

He didn’t answer.

We stayed on that roof for an hour before someone found us.

“Patrick wants to talk to you,” Steve said.“Both of you.”

“You can just pick me up,” I said before Molev could knock my feet out from under me.

He grunted and swept me into his arms.We were off the roof a second later, and I mentally winced thinking about what that drop had to have felt like on his knees.

“After Patrick, we need to find the medic to check your stitches.Lifting me can’t be good for them,” I said.

Molev grunted and eased me to my feet.

We followed Steve inside, where Patrick was speaking with another man. They both turned toward us.

“What exactly did you hear?”the other man asked.

“Three or more hounds,” Molev said.
