That hand on my thigh drifted between my legs and feathered over the thin barrier keeping me from having the time of my life.

“Tell me you like it.Let me taste your lips.Let me—”

The finger teasing my slit stilled at the knock on our door. And for a split second, Molev’s expression showed a level of rage I’d never witnessed. One that matched the roar I’d heard more than once.

I framed his face with my hands.

“Hey,” I said softly.“This is why I was trying not to feel anything. Now isn’t the time or the place for this.Okay?”

His expression calmed, and he released me.I slid off of him, my leg riding way more of his length than it should have, and I went to the door.

“Sup?”I asked Roni, who was grinning at me.

“Katie and I made breakfast. There’s a new guard outside, and I’m itching to do something.Come eat, and let’s go find out what progress has been made.”

I closed the door as she left and saw Molev had already closed himself into the bathroom.Taking advantage of the privacy, I dressed again and made a mental note to ask for some different clothes if we were going to be here for a while.

The others were already in the kitchen when I joined them.

“Have a good night?”Roni asked.

I shook my head at her and helped myself to some eggs.

“So, what’s the plan for today?”I asked.

“Sid and I are restless. We think we should tour the courses. We can show Molev what they’re all about while he watches. If they’re as excited to test him out as I think they are, they’re going to try to get him to play too. That’s when we’ll have them by the short hairs and can start asking questions of our own.”

“I don’t know,” I said.“They’ve been playing nice so far because we brought them what they asked for, and Molev’s let them know he trusts us.How do you think they’ll respond if we start stirring things up?”

“They won’t,” Molev said, coming up behind me.“They are still assessing our bonds and will try to separate each of you from the group to speak to you individually.Andie, if they know you desire safety for your nephew, they will use that as leverage to get what they want.”

I paused eating to look at him in stunned silence. It made perfect sense. Why rush giving me what they promised when they could still use it against me?

“What do they want?”Katie asked.

“Everything,” he said.“Humans always want everything.”

We all stared at him as he helped himself to a portion of the eggs.

“I want to be offended,” Steve said, “but I think you’re right.”

“If that’s how you really think,” I said, “do you truly trust any of us?”

His gaze swept over the group.“You are all willing to give your lives to a single purpose, a purpose I share. We must find a way to stop the infected and the hounds and save the people who remain.Nothing else matters. That is why I trust you.”

Was that what his advance was this morning? To test my resolve?

I started eating my eggs again and decided it didn’t matter if it was or wasn’t because he was right. We shared a single purpose, and that was all that mattered.

“Okay,” Roni said.“Then we finish up here and head to the courses.”

We spent the morning there under the watchful eyes of our guards.Roni and Steve competed hard to see who had the fastest times. No one showed up.Not even the drone. We ate lunch back at the house and set out for the second course.Roland and Sid took over on that one. They didn’t compete but horsed around and explained things to Molev.

The group’s frustration mounted as the light faded. We were all quiet as we made our way back to the house. As soon as we entered, Molev’s gaze swept the room.

“Someone was here,” he said.

“How do you know?”Roland asked.
