“Did your parents try to introduce you to the art of glass blowing?” Gabriel asked.

“Of course, but beyond glass teardrops, I didn’t progress much. They represent the tears I shed from my lack of talent. My parents were nice about it and said everyone has one responsibility in life, and that is to find what they’re good at, as that’s where real happiness stems from. So they sent me into the world to find myself.”

“Your parents seem quite understanding,” said Gabriel.

“Yeah, they’re too cool for me,” Mei said.

“Mei’s mom rocks a mohawk and piercings. Anyone who meets her wants to be like her,” I said.

“They’re very popular in Portland. The only reason I moved states was to escape my parents’ fame. Though now their business has dwindled some,” Mei said.

“How come?” I asked.

“Someone burglarized their shop, and now they’re working hard to restabilize the business by auctioning some of their earlier pieces,” said Mei.

“Excuse me, I must make a call,” said Gabriel and went out of the building.

“I hope they get the money they need to bring the shop back on its feet,” I said.

“Yeah, I thought about going back and helping them, but they were adamant about me staying here at my part-time job and finishing the last year of my Bachelor’s,” Mei said.

“I’m sure they’ll find a way,” I said. “Are you going to have history class this upcoming year?”

“Yeah, Mr. Iglesias is going to be my teacher,” Mei said.

“No way, half his students fail his class and not because he’s a bad teacher, but because he’s too handsome to stay focused in his class.”

“He is indeed handsome,” Mei said. “But he also has seen half of the world and has more in-depth knowledge than any other history teacher. If people would keep their heads out of the gutter, they might discover more than a pretty face.”

“I know. When I asked him about the evolution of language in Eastern European countries, he took a full ten minutes to explain it to me. I got an A in his class, and let me tell you, I had to sweat for that one, and not in a pleasant way.”

“He actually asked about you,” Mei said.

“He did? I didn’t think he would even remember me. His classes are always full,” I said.

“Mr. Iglesias said to give you his number if I see you,” Mei said.

“That’s odd. Give me the number, and I’ll text him now.”

“Maybe he took a different interest in you. And now that you’re not his student anymore, he wants to know you better.” Mei wiggled her brows.

“Stop. That would never happen. He might want to know about my plans for the future education-wise.”

“And why didn’t he do the same for his other hundreds of students who graduate his history class each year?”

“I sent him a text, and he’s calling me now. What should I do?”

“Answer, of course.”

“Hello, Mr. Iglesias. Yes. I did indeed have a good trip ‘how did he know about my trip?’ Um, would you like to meet and talk? I’m here at the campus café now. Do you want me to come over at your office today? Um, okay. I’ll be there in ten minutes. See you soon, Mr. Iglesias.”

“What did he want?” Mei asked eagerly.

“Coincidentally, he’s also at the campus and said he wants to talk to me now. That’s so weird.”

“Well, let’s go then,” Mei said.

“I need to tell Gabriel.”
