“His restaurant is slowly becoming the most exclusive restaurant in the city,” I replied.

“Do you think he would close the place down for you and have a private meal there? How romantic would that be?” Taylor asked breathlessly.

“I don’t see him doing that. Considering how late we’re meeting I don’t think we’re going to be having much of a meal.”

“You didn’t talk about it?”

“No. We were going to but then we got distracted. Though that happens with us a lot.”

I pulled out my jeans as I talked to Taylor and finished getting ready for my date. Needing a bit of sisterly support, I had called Taylor, who had been more than thrilled to find out that I had agreed to go on a date with JD. I just wish I could have told her what he actually meant by date.

“Distracted how?” Taylor asked slowly.

“Not the way you think. We talk, we ask each other questions, which leads to other questions and sometimes we don’t ever finish answering the first question. At first, I thought he was doing it to keep me off my game, so he didn’t have to answer my questions, but it isn’t that. It’s just how we are.”

“Being able to talk to someone is a great way to start a relationship,” she said.

“If that’s what this is.”

“Do you not think it is? What is it then?”

“We haven’t defined it yet. We just agreed to go on a date, an actual date, and see where it goes. We might hate each other when we get to know each other better. It could be a disaster and we might never want to talk to each other again.”

“You don’t think that will happen, do you?” she asked.

“No, but I don’t see it going very far. We need to see what this attraction is; get it out of our system and then we can move on. I want to have a professional relationship with him, but this attraction we have for each other is getting in the way. I’ve known him for a while now and I haven’t asked him a single question for the article. Hopefully, that will change soon.”

“But not tonight?” she asked.

“I’m not sure. We haven’t clearly defined when I’m going to be asking him questions for the article and when we’re going to be dating. Tonight is a date and I’m going to think of it as such. The lines will be crossed between professional and personal no matter what we do, but I want to concentrate on him and I tonight, not the article.”

“It certainly is an interesting little quandary you’re in. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. You’d better call me tomorrow and tell me how it went.”

“Don’t you have class tomorrow morning?”

“Yes, but you can call and leave a voicemail or even a text message, then I’ll have something to look forward to when I get out of class.”

“Fine. I will,” I said with a sigh and then looked at the time. “I should go if I don’t want to be late,” I said as I checked my make-up in the mirror.

“Good luck. Have fun, and don’t forget to call me.”

“I will. Love you.”

“Love you too,” she said and hung up.

The restaurant was almost deserted when I arrived. There were a few couples lingering over their cups of coffee and desserts as the staff quietly cleaned up around them. Rosie waved at me when I walked in and then pointed towards the kitchen letting me know where JD was.

I walked into the kitchen to see JD and Phil, the chef standing over the counter looking over some paperwork. They both looked up as I walked in. JD took in my outfit, slowly moved up to my face, and flashed me a brilliant smile.

“You’re here,” he said.

“Were you afraid I wouldn't show up?”

“The thought did cross my mind,” he said to me and then turned to the chef, “Thanks Phil.”

“Of course, Boss,” Phil said and with a nod walked out of the kitchen.

“Shouldn’t we be the ones leaving his domain?” I asked when Phil had left.
