“It’s great that you’re standing by me, but that doesn’t mean you have to ruin Lexi in the process,” I said.

Mac and Walker exchanged looks and then Mac slowly nodded at Walker. “Told you he would say that,” Mac said.

“Guess he does have it bad for her,” Walker replied.

“My feelings for Lexi have nothing to do with this. It has to do with who she is and the person I’ve gotten to know in the last few months. You’ve gotten to know her too. Do you honestly think she has anything to do with this?” I asked.

“No,” Walker said.

“Not in the least,” Mac added.

“Then why the hell did you draft that bullshit?” I thought I couldn't get more annoyed with my brothers but I realized that I could. I thought they were there to support me, to help me, but instead they were teasing me?

“We needed to make sure you felt the same way. Walker was sure with your past with reporters you were going to be perfectly fine with the release. I figured you wouldn’t be.”

“This was a game, a bet you two played? How wonderful it must be for you. I hope you had a good laugh at my expense. You can both leave now,” I said.

“Don’t be like that,” Walker said.

“We needed to be sure,” Mac added.

“Sure, about what?” I asked.

“Where you stood about your feelings for Lexi. We know you’re into her, but we weren’t sure if your history with one bad reporter would taint your objectivity to Lexi. I, for one, am glad to see that it hasn’t.”

“Assholes,” I muttered.

“It was Mac’s idea. He figured if we came in here all supportive of her, which we are, then you would go the opposite way and say that she was wrong. If we came at her, we had a feeling you would defend her, or at least be annoyed with us enough to do it. He was right,” Walker said.

“I’m always right,” Mac said.

“And modest,” I added and Walker laughed.

“Dude, none of us are modest. It isn’t in our DNA. We were worried that your ego would have been bruised and you would take it out on Lexi.”

“No. As soon as I read the article, I knew she didn’t have anything to do with it. I wish I could get a hold of her so I can talk to her,” I said.

“She hasn’t gotten in touch with you?” Walker asked.

“No. I called her as soon as I read the article but it went to voicemail. She hasn’t called back,”

“Your phone is off,” Walker stated.

“And you aren’t taking any calls here,” Mac added.

“Shit,” I said and went to turn on my phone.

As I did, I heard a commotion outside my office. I couldn’t make out what the people were saying but it was definitely two women and they were yelling. I immediately recognized one of the voices and bolted out of my office.

Mac and Walker were right at my heels. I went out into the dining area to see Samantha holding a broom in front of her as she tried to push Lexi away from her.

“If you touch me with that broom one more time, you’re going to find it in places that haven’t seen the light of day,” Lexi said.

“You can’t go and see him. Leave or I’m calling the police!” Samantha yelled.

“Ladies, please,” I said.

Both of them turned to look at me. Samantha with a smug look on her face as if she knew that I would kick Lexi out, while Lexi looked at me as if she wasn’t sure what I was thinking. I could see the worry and concern on her face.
