“You even have to ask? If you want this to go smoothly. If you want this to go well for Lexi and the family and your restaurant, don’t go anywhere. The fact that you called me instead of Mac tells me you knew it was a bad idea,” Walker said.

“Fine. Maybe you’re right,” I said with a sigh.

“What was that? I didn’t hear you completely. What did you say?”

“Screw you. You heard me perfectly well. I still want the name of our pilot so I can book something as soon as this is all done.”

“You might have to check with the folks. I think Mac might be using it soon,” Walker said.

“Really? Does he have something planned?”

“He might have mentioned wanting to get out there with Hope soon.”

“If he needs it for some romantic getaway with Hope before the baby comes, I’ll gladly bow out.”

“You know there are other places you could go with Lexi if you are wanting to get away?”

“I know but that one’s so nice and we would have it all to ourselves.”

“Yes, the whole privacy thing is a very nice perk.”

“I don’t want to know what you and Morgan did when you were out there.”

“That’s a good thing, because I’m not going to tell you.”

“It would be nice to get away with Lexi, to just forget about everything and to see how we can be, just us,” I said.

“You haven’t done that since you started sleeping with her? You two have hardly come up for air.”

“The article and the restaurant have always hung between us. I haven’t had the time that I wanted to give to her, that I should give to her. I figured if we went away, I could do that.”

“You’re serious about her,” Walker said, drawing out the words slowly.

“Yeah. I think I am. I did practically everything I could to keep her in my bed this morning and she wouldn’t stay.”

“Are you into her because you can’t have her? That isn’t a way to have a relationship,” Walker stated.

“No, though maybe a little. I like that there’s more to her than a gorgeous body, even though she does have that. She isn’t easily persuaded to do what I want her to do, even when I’m naked.”

“More information than I wanted about you, brother,” Walker muttered.

“And it isn’t just that, but that I wanted her to stay. You know me, in the past I was trying to find the quickest way to get them out of my place without offending them.”

“Too much,” Walker added.

“Exactly. It isn’t the case with Lexi. The exact opposite is true. She even called my place “home” today and I didn’t go running for the hills.”

“Dang, JD. You’re in love with her,” Walker said.

“Yeah. I think I am,” I replied.

Hearing him say the words and me agreeing was actually freeing. I felt lighter having admitted it to him. If any of my siblings would understand that gravity and the seriousness of the statement, he would.

“Congrats, man. Welcome to the club. It’s one hell of a place to be,” Walker said.

“I hope so. Now, I just need to see how she feels about me,” I said as my stomach started to knot up.

“The woman is crazy about you. She’s stuck by you so far including meeting the family not once but twice and came to you first when the article broke. If that isn’t a woman who is into you, I don’t know one who is.”
