I manage to wrap my arms around her, holding her from behind. “It means you look like you miss the hell out of me.”

She turns around slightly and rolls her eyes, but she doesn’t push me off her. Instead, she interlocks her hand in mine.

“Why haven’t you returned any of my calls?” I ask, resting my chin on her shoulder.

She lowers her head. “I told you I wanted to be alone.”

Is this really how she handles stress? By shutting everyone out? I never thought I’d say it, but she’s worse than me.

I plant a single kiss on her neck. “How have you been?”

She side-eyes me. “Do you need to ask?”

“Mia, I know things have been hard, but I promise you won’t have to deal with anything like that ever again,” I say. “I told you I’m taking care of it. You trust me, right?”

For the briefest moment, she hesitates. Eventually, she nods and rests her head against my chest. “I do.”

I lift her chin, peering into her puffy yet gorgeous eyes. “Your resignation is denied. You have a passport, right?”

She furrows her brows. “Yes.”

“Great.” I release her from my embrace but keep a hold of her hand. “We need to scout some of those overseas locations. Pack your stuff.”

Her jaw drops. “What? Now?”

I nod. “Look at it this way. You’ll get a little bit more time away from work while spending time in Europe with me. Who would say no to that?”

Mia, of course.

“Just the two of us?” she asks. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”

“You’re my intern. Why wouldn’t you check out film locations with me?” I step closer to her and trace the outline of her jaw. It’s feminine yet defined. “Do you think it’s a bad idea?” I growl.

She closes her eyes, surrendering to my touch. Fuck, I’d take her right now if my jet wasn’t scheduled to leave soon.

Mia shakes her head. “It doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all.”

“We’re in agreement then.” I give her a lingering kiss on her forehead. “Pack your best vacation clothes. We leave for Monaco in an hour.”

Chapter 23

Mia

Thisisinsane.

I shouldn’t be flying on a private jet to my dream European vacation spot. To be fair, it’s not a real vacation, it’s for work, but it still doesn’t feel real. This overseas detour feels crazy.

As I’m reclined in my cushiony seat that’s as soft as a cloud, with Carter’s fingers interlocked with mine while we hold hands, I feel like it’s time for me to stop overthinking everything. We’re already an hour into our flight, so there isn’t much I can do but enjoy the trip. Perhaps these next few days should just be about living in the moment. It’s been a long time since I’ve gone with the flow…if I’ve ever actually done that, to begin with.

Carter rests his head back in the seat and releases a sigh. It’s a mixture of both exhaustion and excitement for the trip ahead.

He turns to me. “Are you excited?”

“I feel like Ishouldbe,” I say. “But my mind keeps going back to what’s going to happen when I go return to work.”

“There isn’t anything to worry about,” he assures me, squeezing my hand. “I took care of everything at work. Everyone knows Michael and Kristen set you up to be gossiped about.”

Unfortunately, this doesn’t make me feel that confident people still won’t talk behind my back. Carter’s threats only ensure that they’ll play nice to my face.
