She snorts. “Walk me home? This is Winter Falls.”

She’s avoiding the main topic again. She’s sneaky. I need to keep on my toes with this one.

“Why didn’t you wake me to let me know you were going?”

She crosses her arms over her chest and I glance down to watch her breasts heave. But when she asks, “Why would I?” My eyes snap back to her face.

“Why would you? Because it’s the right thing to do.” Because I woke up in bed all alone when I expected to wake up with her in my arms. Because I’m not finished with her.

“I think there’s been a miscommunication.”

Finally. She’s getting it.

“Last night was a bit of fun to blow off steam.”

My nostrils flare at her explanation. Guess she’s not getting it after all. “It was definitely fun but it was more than blowing off steam.”

“What do you think last night was?” she asks and throws the ball in my court. I gladly accept the pass.

“The start of us.”

Her eyes widen. “The start of us? There is no us.”

“Darling, there is.”

“Did you forget you hate me?”

I don’t hate her. Far from it. “Did it feel like I hated you last night when I had you naked underneath me?”

Heat flares in her eyes. “No.”

“Did it feel like I hated you when I helped you yesterday afternoon with setting up the tables for the reception?”

“That was you feeling guilty.”

I bend over and bite her earlobe. “I don’t feel guilty about shit.”

She shivers before she clears her throat. “You opened my mail.”

“We’re beyond that. I apologized and you accepted my apology.”

She tries again. “You pity me.”

I punch my hips until my hardness hits her stomach. “The last thing I feel for you is pity.”

Her knees wobble and I wrap an arm around her waist to steady her. “We’re starting something here. I don’t know where it will end up. But we’re going to give it a try. We’re letting bygones be bygones and starting over.”

She inhales a deep breath before ducking under my arm and stepping away.

“I don’t do relationships. I don’t do commitment. If you want to have another round of fun, feel free to give me a ring. But no strings attached.”

“What the fuck?” I prowl toward her.

She raises her palm to stop me. “This has nothing to do with you.”

My nostrils flare. How dare she say it has nothing to do with me? “The hell it doesn’t. This is personal.”

“I don’t do commitment. Ever. I thought you knew this.”
