I figured Maisy would love that, but it would be lost on me. Because after I finally got a look at her, I didn’t think I’d want to look away.

I don’t remember getting in place under the flower covered arbor. And I don’t remember Sloane standing next to me as my best man. I definitely don’t remember all three of Maisy’s friends walking down the sandy aisle in front of her.

But I remember this…

My girl in a glittering halter dress. The way the stark white contrasted with her red hair as it lay draped over one shoulder. Her smile, wide, and bright as the sun that was already all but gone. The way her eyes couldn’t look away from me either as she took step after step, closing the distance between us.

I remember the promises we made each other-- to be faithful and true, to cherish and honor, to have and hold-- and sliding the ring on her finger as gentle tears trailed over her cheeks to fall on a happy smile.

“I love you,” I whispered, still holding her hand. That part wasn’t in the vows, but I wanted to be sure she knew.

“I love you too, Malachi.”

I remember the priest saying, “You may now kiss the bride!” but unfortunately…

He was one second too late, because I’d already captured Maisy’s lips, tipping her backward to brand this day into her memory like it would be in mine.

Forever.

And when the small crowd around us roared their approval, I straightened, bringing her close so we were eye to eye.

“Wanna go for a swim?” I winked.

“Shucks. No swimsuit this time,” she said, a faint blush tinting her cheeks.

I lowered my mouth to her ear. “Who said we needed ‘em?”

She pursed her lips but I could see the playfulness in her eyes.

“We should at least wait for our guests to leave.”

I sighed dramatically. “If you insist.”

“I insist,” she hissed. “I have a jealous streak, don’t you remember? Or do I need to make you wear a sign that saysBelongs to Maisy?”

Grinning, I held up my hand, flashing her my newly crowned ring finger.

“Already got one.”

And then I kissed the laugh from her lips, like I planned to do for many, many years to come.
